Travel Diaries: Thriving Golden Bay, Perhentian Islands III.

in travel •  8 years ago

Golden Bay is a hidden public beach accessed through a quick walk through Shari La Resort.
It is my favourite beach, for obvious reasons. The water is crystal and the fish abundant.

Here is where I swam with the juvenile Eagle Ray, entertained a very curious mother shark while her babies zipped around me, got bit by protective Damsel fish, and spend my afternoons reading and falling asleep under the trees. Morning’s this side of the island is lovely; we had the place to ourselves!

This time of year (April-May) is nesting season for Damsel and Trigger fish so be careful where you step, if you feel a nip at your heels just move away from whatever rock it is you were standing on or close to. Papa Damsel’s get aggressive and can break skin (not fun if you plan to be in the ocean; that saltwater burn, ugh).

Crystal clear.

Cleanliness is always an issue in Asia, I don't even want to begin on the topic. Let's just say the tourism board should reward local shopkeepers and resort owners for cleaning up after ugly tourists (mostly locals). It is neverending and if not for them, the Perhentians would probably not be what you see here.

Also, cheers to all the divers out there who grab garbage off the ocean floor. You go, Glen Coco!
