Travels With Connie #48 My Hometown

in travel •  7 years ago

Sometimes I know exactly where I am going. In that case it’s easy, pick a route and go.

More often I have an idea where I’d like to end up, and generally speaking a direction to go.

Once in a while I just follow the front wheel and see where it takes me.

I was prompted to do this after I saw a post from a friend about his hometown. That would be Whack Science from Split, Croatia. That'll be easy, I thought. Take a few pictures, slap up a post, how hard can it be?

I'll tell you how hard. This is MY hometown. I didn't really realize how important where I live is until I started taking photos. This isn't going to be a 'slap up' post, it's going to be a series. I have things to share that are really important to me.

This is part of what is commonly called 'old town'. Yuma has had a human prescense for hundreds of years because it is the site of a Ford across the Colorado River that is useable most of the year. Long before the Europeans came here this was an important place, the only place to cross the river for a couple hundred miles.

The town that survives isn't that old. The River has a habit of wiping out all traces of civilization periodically, so most of these buildings down town are less than 100 years old. When this town was built, Yuma was an important river port that served the mining districts to the north. The streets are incredibly wide to allow teams of horses and mules to turn around.

I have no idea the significance of this guy, but he lives on a wall just behind Connie in the first picture. One of two.

Hotel San Carlos and the Hotel Del Sol were big resort hotels back in the 20s and 30s. Lying around in the sun and the perfect tan were thought to be healthful then. The Del Sol had a guarantee: The sun will shine or you get your night's accommodations free. They did't have to give away many, Yuma averages 363 sunny days per year.

I like that City of Yuma has put their offices here in old town. This is quite a new building that blends in very well. County of Yuma has most of their offices in the area, too. They have taken several old buildings and renovated them rather than tearing down and starting over. I like that from my town.

This theater is a public project and is wonderfully restored. It hosts some 'small venue' concerts, dance recitals and other things including 2 film series annualy. It's a pretty good place to watch a documentary on the Gila Monster.

This is the entrance to arguably the most famous bar/restaurant combo in Yuma. Lute's casino has been many things over the years from a whorehouse to a Wedding Chapel but has been an eclectically decorated tavern for a long time. The signature cheese burger has a split hot dog weiner on it as a condiment. It's really pretty good.

Well, I've listened to 3 different versions of 'My Hometown' by Bruce Springsteen on a loop while kicking this together. It really is my hometown. There will be more and thanks for coming along for the ride.

All words and photographs in this post are mine. For better or worse

Thank you for sharing your town and memories with us, it looks lovely and that signature cheese burger sounds very interesting ;)

I can't believe how much fun this has been already, and I have much more to share.

It is an interesting burger. All the better because of the surroundings. It's a fun place that always has a crowd.

Thats some nice small buildings with nice details and characters. I love the brick and timber juxtaposition. 😁😁

Awesome post bro. its a great idea for travel when mind is . thanks @bigtom13 you are my ideal.

Oh my goodness, 363 sunny days in a year? That's amazing!

It is the PERFECT place for a motorcycle rider :)

Always great!! By the Way...did you see my post yesterday on one of your favorites!!! was thinking BigTOM 13 has to stop by...take a look!!

it's really nice out west, one day I hope to get out there, stuck on the east coast all of my life...

I've spent some time in the East, and the truth is I'm a Westerner. I was born under the big sky and have loved it all my life.

I've known some Eastern types that have fallen in love with the west. Be careful...

I like you photography, Nice post

a great post @bigtom13
I can get to know where you live.
thanks for sharing information about Yuma old town

Glad you are along for the ride.

Congrats @bigtom13

What a great start to this tour of Yuma. I like how the architecture has some latin themes. Correct me if I am wrong. I have always been a fan of those arches that welcome you into a town. I'm looking forward to more in this series. I have never thought to do this but I could share so much about my home town of Halifax and where I live now. Cool idea.

I really had in mind that this would be a slam dunk. I just can't believe how much I love this place.

Yes, that is Latin influence. Deep, shady colonnades really are practical here.

Nice tour. Thank you for showing us. Are you saying that you have sunny days all year? :)

Easiest job on earth is TV Weather Person in Yuma AZ. All you have to do is look good, point at the map and say "Sunny and Warm." Or "Sunny and Hot". You are right every time.

Hahahahaha that is funny!

Cheers! Great travel. I like elephant's head and its tusks. Its owner has a great taste in decorating. Thank you for sharing these pictures

They are so totally unexpected, I wish I knew the story of them. I'm glad you came along for the ride.

Of course all your pictures are fabulous. And you have a wonderful hometown. I will follow your series to find out more about it. Thank you

Excellent post about your Hometown, I guess that you really like it from the story you have told us. Would be cool to see some pictures of the desert travel.

I love my home town. It's adopted, I've been here a little less than 20 years, but I like it here. There will be desert photos, I promise. It's part and parcel of this place.

Whao Yuma is a beautiful town there at Arizona . I presume that . The Del Sol hotel was the hotel we discussed about the other day. Those pictures too are cute. Well done @bigtom13

Yes, the very place! I wish I could have seen this area in it's heyday. I'll bet it was really something. It's a 'rough and tumble' town, and I'm guessing down town was one happening place.

What else is there to do in Yuma?

Ahahahahaha. I concede that point :) It's not as 'rough and tumble' as it once was.

I'm so glad I inspired you to do this. And you immediately saw the best thing about it:

I didn't really realize how important where I live is until I started taking photos.

This exactly happened to me. When I saw how many photos I could take that matters to me I was shocked.

Great post my friend, keep sharing your beautiful stories!

Your post was soooo good, I just loved it. I knew that I had to when I saw yours.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Looks such a cool place and looking forward to reading more about it

Yuma averages 363 sunny days per year.
Hmmm I may have to look into that area for when I retire :)

Thanks for sharing your home town!

It is my pleasure. Really!

Tom,
I think you have motivated me to get out in my home town and do the same thing. There is a lot of history with my neck of the woods as well here in Vincennes, IN. Hope to share some of it on #steepshot some day. Maybe even this weekend.

I think that would be just super cool. I look forward to it Joe!

This is fun. I must do something similar. I love travelling. And guess what? I don't really know my hometown so well

Cool! Never been to Yuma, but I spent a couple weeks in Tuscon as a kid, and took the whole family of six to the Grand Canyon in the old Subaru wagon back in '97. I feel like I've been to Yuma now!
