Thai or Balinese Massage ? Which one is right for you ?

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

When I go on vacation I want a tropical beach, drinks with little umbrella hats, and if possible a relaxing massage every day. Luckily, in many places in South-east Asia, massage is an affordable luxury. My two favourite styles are Balinese and Thai, but whats the difference? Today, I will explain to you the subtle nuances that separate them.

Balinese Vs Thai Massage

Balinese Massage

Out of the 2 types, I would say that Balinese is definitely the gentler option. This style relies heavily on firm pressure aimed at deeply relaxing the muscle tissue. The careful combination of gentle stretching together with acupressure help in restoring the flow of energy and release of tension throughout the body. The deep pressure of Balinese massage is great for relieving stress, loosening tight muscles, and increasing circulation.

SPA VENUS, VILLA KUBU, SEMINYAK, BALI.

Although Balinese Massage can still be painful if the masseuse finds a knot, the pressure can be adjusted to your needs. Personally, I love a strong massage as I know its working and I can really feel the benefits of it afterwards

I have had many Balinese Massages during my trips to Bali, however one venue stands out clearly above the rest. The Spa Venus which makes up part of the Villa Kubu Complex. The Spa Venus offer a service that is a cut above the rest. If you are staying at Villa Kubu you can even organize to have your massage in the garden by your private pool. Pure heaven, and worth every cent. I find their staff at Venus Spa to be more highly-skilled and professional in comparison to some of the other options around Bali. I always get the traditional Balinese Massage, but they also have a wide variety of scrubs, facials and other treatments. My wife loves it also.

THAI MASSAGE
If you like it rough, then a bone-cracking Thai massage is for you. A skilled Thai masseuse will use fingers, thumbs even elbows to push, prod and twist you through a solid routine of relaxation. Although parts of it are very vigorous, I usually get a 2 hour Thai massage and still manage to drift off to sleep during it. If you don't mind a bit of pain and being contorted into awkward positions then you will love Thai massage. At the end of it you will feel great. It is very effective for relieving stress, muscle aches and tension. When I was playing a lot of sport, I would get a Thai massage weekly to remedy some of the damage I had done after having lumps kicked off me on the football pitch.

There are literally endless choices when it comes to Thai massage, so for me I like to find a good local shop that is convenient for me to get to, and where the therapist will remember what I like and don't like. I always look for the older ladies with short stumpy fingers like bananas, you just know you will get worked over good. My favourite little Thai spot is Le Spa in Suan Plu in Bangkok. The owner Lek, remembers all his clients by name and his shop is clean, quiet and relaxing...and near my home!

So, next time you are considering getting a massage, then you may want to consider these 2 styles. Bali, for a more relaxed, deep tissue massage or Thai for something a little stronger and brutal.

You can use anything that gives you the “slip” you want for massage. You can find https://massagetablesnow.com/massage-creams-oils/ oils, lotions, and gels designed for it. You can use cocoa butter, lotion from your bathroom, or really you could even use spit if you want to! (I’m not recommending it, however it’s possible!)

I use a pumpable cream— it’s a thick cream that is still somewhat fluid. I like it because it gives the slip I need to not pull the skin and is absorbed well by the skin so my clients don’t leave feeling like an oil slick. I will also use jojoba oil sometimes. These are my favorites.

Both sound so tempting, don't they? If you're leaning towards a vacation filled with relaxation and tropical vibes, why not treat yourself to a massage experience right at home?
