The Wild Atlantic way is trail along the west coast of Ireland from the fishing village of Kinsale to the choppy north coast of Donegal. And when we say wild here in Ireland we mean wild. The trail offers stunning views , soaring cliffs , rough seas, cosy pubs in small Irish harbour towns and cities , craic and music, hidden bays and secluded beaches. This is an adventure more than a journey. The trail is becoming popular amongst tourist who want to sample the real Ireland. Ireland received 10.6 million visitors last year and many are flocking to do the wild Atlantic way.
The trail is getting more and more popular by pedal bike. it takes around a week to do but it’s some experience. I read quite a lot of @blacklux blogs on Steemit and she talks about the constant heat that is summer all year round . Well this is the holiday for her. The face would be red raw from the freshness and the cold 😂😂😂. There is nothing better than parking the bike up outside a pub and asking for a hot whiskey or an Irish coffee to warm your cockels after a day of cycling/walking some of the most scenic places on the planet.
Did I ever tell you the largest wave ever recorded was off the coast of Sligo. It was beaten recently by one in Portugal. (Curse the Portuguese and their giant waves knocking Ireland off its pedestal) And yeah that’s place is on the trail . I met quite a lot of Aussie surfers in camper vans on my route. They loved the giant waves. They don’t have to worry about sharks , just jagged rocks. Photo below shows a surfer in Sligo. I sat close by and watched these guys risk their lives to get a buzz. The waves were huge. I’d be washed up in New York one year later if I even attempted it.
The Wild Atlantic way is getting to be a popular destination for winter trips to Ireland because it does what it says on the tin! Expect wind , expect rain , expect safe havens and cosy pub corners and trad music in the back ground. Expect lots of sheep and lots of friendly people. This is the real Ireland. Donegal is north of the trail and some call it Kerry untouched because it hasn’t been changed or Irished up with leprecauns by tourism yet while Dingle is a little town in Kerry where you can get a drink while the barman repairs your shoes. Top gear recently did a section driving the Wild Atlantic Way and the producers really did a great job setting the scene.
This trail has a lot going for it. Ireland is renowned for its unpredictable weather. But this trail is weather proof! It’s wild . If there wasn’t rain you would be disappointed!
Thanks for posting @blancy, we're up in Donegal here on the Atlantic Way. Upvoted and now following a fellow Irish geek with interest!

Hey Blanchy. Like the sound of that plus the Irish pubs would kind of put a sweetener on things.

The pubs on the trail are top class. Proper drinking pubs with big fires and great whiskey that will have you warm while the wind and rain blast the windows . Heaven

The problem is I know they will be all good and it would take me longer than a week to do. I suppose that would be a good problem then.

I’ve always thought living in a hot climate would be amazing and then I lived in the canaries for a year and couldn’t wait to put a jacket on when I got home. On the downside , hanging washing out from November to March makes them wetter! There are pros and cons 😂😂

It is a strange thing how it seems to take years to adapt to a climate. I know a lady from the north that came here and was incredibly miserable. She even started having issues with sweat glands. I think I would never stop shivering in a real winter.

Ah you would be grand! Just lash on the wooly jumper and a good coat and you are laughing . That woman from the north reminds me of my mother (without the sweat gland issue 😂😂😂) . Hates the heat

No problem Janton !! I know the feeling. Mine is down too so il take a couple of days just commenting myself. The trail is all year round . The winters have lots of wind and rain . Temperatures drop in winter to around 0-8 degrees which is not below freezing but the wind chill factor is huge. I know polish people who are used to -17 degrees that find it colder here because the wind cuts them whereas back in Poland it wouldn’t be as bad . Most places in Ireland aren’t far from the see . Maybe 30 miles so you got the sea breeze too . Summers are a mixed bag . Could reach high 20s or it could rain . You never know.

Ye know I haven't been in the Wesht since I was at the Gaeltacht in about 1972. I'll have to get me arse in gear, get outta Dublin and see some of that gorgeous scenery.
