Twitter recommendations and a trip to San Gimignano Tuscany

in travel •  6 years ago  (edited)

Myself and my wife love Italy. We headed to Rome when we first dated and fell in love with the food primarily. Thats the good thing about being European. Weekends away to different cultures only an hour or two away.
The Italian way of eating takes a bit of getting used to. You have you Primi which is a starter then your anti-pasta or salad then your pasta and then you have your secondi or meat dish!!! Jesus! That is alot of food. I saw a guy eat a bruschetta , then full plate of pasta and then tuck into a large pizza and not a pick on him. Carb central and this guy had a six pack.
We received a tip off our local priest in our town in Ireland. Eat where the priests eat in Rome because they know where the best food is for the cheapest prices. They avoid the tourist traps also. This was and still is a great tip. So after Rome we went to Venice and Milan and every year we try and go somewhere new in Italy. I wanted to go on holidays to Tuscany which would include taking in Florence and Pisa as they were nearby. I always wanted to go there also after reading a Dan Brown book that was based in Florence and I was mad to see the basillica.
My wife is the planner and organiser of the family. However she gave me the Tuscany job to book flights and hotel. I really wanted somewhere nice to stay and I wasn't coming up with anything on Tripadvisor. So I took to Twitter and tweeted "Has anyone stayed in anywhere in Tuscany that you would recommend?" A hour later a journalist replied to me. Try Borgo di Colleoli in Colleoli. Its beautiful. It looks amazing and thats where I bring people for dinner parties. So I looked it up and it looked really nice so I had a look at the prices and amazingly they weren't that expensive so I booked straight away. Borgo di Colleoli lies deep in the Tuscan mountains and it a classic complex consisting of an old house and little bungalows. We stayed in one bungalow. There were two restaurants on the complex and beautiful pool. Below are a few photos.

The complex itself is in the middle of nowhere so you needed to rent a car to get around. Fine with us. We visited a few vineyards in the area and drank their wine. Big wine drinker here. One of the women that owned a vineyard told us that not drinking wine with a meal was a shame on humanity. You might as well die. I wouldn't go that far but I do like wine with my meal. There was a lay-by high up in the hills where you could look down on the valley and it is there we set our eyes on San Gimignano.

It was like something from Lord of the Rings. These towers rising out of the town, we had to go there and have a look. When we drove down to it we passed by the town of Volterra where they filmed that vampire film that the tweenys love. Twilight. Fields and fields of sun flowers. I was class and I regret not getting a photo

We entered the town and were amazed by the architecture , the towers, and the atmosphere in the town itself. I love discovering new towns that are not on the map so to speak and this was by far the best place we came across.

We had a look around and it got even better. We stumbled upon the ice cream parlour that had just won the worlds best ice cream award. The place was packed. We didn't care how long it took to queue. We were having one.

We ate our ice cream in the square where a band from the Netherlands were playing. Two beautiful girls and two guys. And they were really good. I have them on video doing a song about a fisherman sailing in the sea and it was a great song.
We travelled up to Pisa for the day as we heard there was not alot to Pisa other than the leaning tower which was true. So onto Florence we went and we were not disappointed. I cover Florence another day. City is just steeped in history. Deserves its own story.

Thanks a million for taking some time to read this post! I really appreciate it.

Really Marvellous sights, and Beautiful places. Clear you really enjoyed your tour through there. Surely, Italy never disappoints her guests.
And I really want to have a taste of the world's best ice-cream.
Dear Italy!

howdy sir blanchy! wow. you should be the tourism minister for Italy man! I mean I would love to go there sometime, how often do you guys get to travel? the photos are amazing but what about the ice cream..was it the world's best?

Yeah it was probably the best . I was trying to find the photo of us tucking into it but I couldn’t find it . Yes the old country is beautiful

better than Ireland?

I am so envious of your proximity to so much. And also the age of everything around you. I happen to live in a very old part of North America, but everywhere else nearby isn't in the same league.

This takes me back to my tour of Italy eight years ago. My favorite part was a tiny town in Calabria, San Donato di Ninea. Everyone stared at us like we were freaks it was such a small town. I don't drink, but I got really drunk one night because we had an amazing and ridiculously cheap bottle of wine, and my husband wasn't in the mood to drink, and I was not going to waste it. I remember walking along the side of a large hill in the dark, and all the lights below had lovely halos :)

What a nice get-away. Go to Greece for me next time. Just a skip and a hop. Or Scotland, just hop over a creek and it's your backyard.

I must look up that town. May add it to the list . I work quite a lot in Scotland so I’m there once a month! I love the people. Very like the Irish. A lot more weather beaten 😂😂. It’s cold up there . Been to Greece a few times . There’s a place called Santori that we love but Greece is broke economically and there is a lot going on by its borders with everything happening in Syria. So I’ve been told to stay clear by relatives who have seen bad things while lying on a beach.

Yes, a shame about Greece. Since I was a kid I wanted to see Egypt, but I'm too chicken now. Maybe we'll make our way over to Scotland one of these days...in the summer.

Anyone I’ve ever known that went to Egypt always said it was a let down. Wouldn’t mind seeing the pyramids myself but don’t fancy the Burger King beside them. Yeah Scotland in the winter is fairly bleak. Even in the summer its touch and go! 😂😂. Place called the Isle of Skye is really nice and Edinburgh is one of the nicest cities in Europe.

Good to know. I will try and write off Egypt in my mind.

I've been to northern places on this continent in the summer and with my thin blood I needed a sweater and I just couldn't wrap my head around it. That is not summer :)

If I ever make it that way I will consult you on where to go :)

yeah we re pretty much sweater weather all year round bar July and August here in Ireland and UK. Mainland Europe is a bit different . Germany and Poland have great summers. Yeah let me know if you are thinking about it. We have itinerary we give our friends for Scotland Wales and England.

Tuscany looks like a great place to visit, the ancient architectures look really fascinating.

Borgo di Colleoli is beautiful, there seem to alot of stunning views there. I would love to taste that ice cream which you awarded the "the world best" though, it must be really delicious to get that award from you.

Yeah it was a great holiday Audrey. Lots to do. We could lie on a sunbed or go out and discover the vineyards or ancient towns. Something for everyone.

Oh yeah, there is definitely something for everyone. You are so fortunate to live so close to such an amazing place...

All I see are beautiful photos and a reason to visit Italy. Hopefully one day
