Located in the popular Xinyi area, you can find Uncles Taipei 魷魚大叔 in the ATT4 Fun building on the 4th floor. If you're looking for one of the best instagram locations in Taipei, this is it. The 4th floor of the ATT4Fun building is ridiculously interesting. Uncles keeps up with the decor by decorating the restaurant like a Korean street food alley.

Uncles Korean Food Taipei 魷魚大叔 Review

You'll find some of the tables are set up like Korean street food carts. There are Korean phone booths on the wall and you can also find the walls decorated in comics. You'll end up coming here because it looks interesting and stay for the interesting food.

When getting a seat at Uncles Taipei 魷魚大叔, expect the place to be busy on a Friday and Saturday night. They'll seat you wherever is immediately available, but feel free to ask for a seat at one of the street food cart tables. If you're taking pictures, the extra light over the table helps a lot!

There are a LOT of meat dishes here, as you would expect with most Korean restaurants. I love eating meat but during my visit I happened to be on a temporary vegetarian phase of life. Luckily, there are vegetarian options at Uncles Taipei 魷魚大叔!

All menus at the table will be in Chinese. Uncles Taipei 魷魚大叔 does have a (much smaller) English menu. Take a look at the Chinese menu if you're looking for more options.

4/5 Kimchi Cheese Pancake NT$390

If you're familiar with Korean pancakes, this place does it very well! All the Korean Kimchi flavor, fluffy at the center and best of all crispy around the edges. They also have a seafood flavored pancake, but if you're vegetarian, you'll love the full flavor of their kimchi pancake.

The portion of the kimchi cheese pancake is pretty big. It's practically a main dish by itself.

4/5 Uncles Original Rice Cake (ddukbokkie) NT$290

This is big a portion! It's served in a pan and placed over a small candle lit fire at the table. This is to keep the dish warm otherwise the cheese inside will harden. My arteries will take care of that part!

Uncles Taipei 魷魚大叔 Original Rice cake is served at various degrees of spiciness. We got the mild flavor which I would equate to a medium-hot level. It was spicy. My face was red, nose was runny and started coughing. But it was so delicious I powered through the "mild" pain. Keep in mind, I ate here in February 2020 during the corona virus outbreak. People are very concerned about their health and it's the worst time to be sick otherwise you might get quarantined.

As for the taste, it was delicious! A mixture of sweet and spicy. The sauce around the rice cake was so much that it was like a soup. The rice cakes were delightfully chewy (as they should be). You could also find the fish cake, cut up hard boiled eggs, kimchi and cheese throughout the dish. This is pretty much their signature dish which is something you should absolutely try.

4/5 Korean Steamed Egg NT$100

First off, if you're looking for vegetarian dishes, avoid this. There is fish roe inside the egg. Luckily, we were just trying to be vegetarian for a month with nothing at stake, so you should know the Korean steamed egg has fish roe. Definitely confirm with the servers about any dietary restrictions before ordering.

The Korean steamed egg was super fluffy. It took about 25 minutes to get this dish though. The servers did warn us that it may take 10-15 minutes to be ready, but it was much longer. We were almost done with our meal when the steamed egg was done.

But it was cooked perfectly! Super fluffy egg with a little saltiness from the fish roe, topped with green onions. If you got the Uncles Original Rice cake, you are probably left with a lot of the sweet/spicy kimchi sauce. I HIGHLY recommend taking a spoonful of the steamed egg and dipping it in the soup. This takes the flavor to a 10/10 for deliciousness.

Prices were not too bad. The only thing is that the price is high, but the servings are also big. This means you can only eat at Uncles Taipei with a group of people. Not ideal for 1-2 people since you'll not be able to try many dishes. During our meal for 2, 3 dishes was too many and we had a large bag of leftovers.

It's not that leftovers are a bad thing, but it also produces a lot of waste. If you don't take the leftovers that wasted food. On the flip side, if you do take the leftovers you generate more waste with the take out packaging.

The service wasn't great at Uncles Taipei 魷魚大叔. For most places you visit in Taipei, you can expect to get amazing service so you really notice when the service is bad.

When we were getting seated, we asked if they could seat us at the Korean street cart tables. They obliged which was nice, but it was downhill from there.

As with most traditional Korean restaurants, there is a call button at the table to call the servers. After I noticed the menus where only in Chinese I pressed the CALL button. No one showed up after waiting 5 minutes. I pressed the CALL button again. Waited another 5 minutes and nothing. I then got up to ask someone for an English menu.

Luckily, when we were ready to order, someone actually showed up after pressing the button. The rest of the service was okay, but lackluster. I asked for take out for the leftovers and they quickly packaged it for us which redeemed their score to a final 3/5 for service.

Overall Impression of Uncles Korean Food Taipei 魷魚大叔

Uncles Taipei 魷魚大叔 has a lot of the rich flavors you expect from Korean food. I will definitely come back again to try more of their dishes and it's probably the best Korean food in Taipei I've had as of yet. Most Korean restaurants in Taipei I've experienced haven't been as close to as tasty as the food at Uncles Taipei.

Money In Taiwan

Tax Is Included In The Price

All displayed prices in Taiwan are the actual price. Tax is already included and for large purchases, tourists visiting Taiwan can get a 5% Taiwan VAT refund at the airport Tax Refund counter. Some shops offer this service too, but they will require your passport.

Taiwan Is Cash Only (For Most Small Shops)

The primary payment method for all transactions in Taiwan is cash. It's very rare for small shops to take anything other than cash. It's more common to see places accept the Taipei Metro Card as payment rather a credit card.

Supermarkets and convenience stores in Taiwan (7-Eleven, Family Mart) do not accept credit cards (at least not American credit cards). You can only make purchases by cash or by using your pre-loaded funds on your EasyCard.

Using Credit Cards in Taiwan

If you want to use your credit card in Taiwan, make sure to check if a restaurant in Taiwan accepts credit card in advance. When a place does accept credit card, it will typically be Visa or Mastercard. It's extremely rare for a place to accept Discover and American Express.
UberEats, HonestBee, Deliveroo and FoodPanda are Taipei Food Delivery Services where you can order food directly to your airbnb or hotel using a credit card.

Exchanging Money in Taiwan
