Biking in Cape Town: Lazy Sunday Llandudno ride.

in travel •  8 years ago

Hey Guys!

This past weekend we had some really good Summer vibes down here in Cape Town and it would have been a crime not to have taken full advantage of it!

After last week's massive ride through Franschhoek (See this post) I decided to have a bit more of a mellow outing and stay local.

The route we took started off in Cape Town CBD, through Camps Bay, Oudekraal, Llandudno and Hout Bay. This a great scenic coastal route to take for a nice Sunday drive through to Hout Bay or to Llandudno beach.

One of the great things about living in Cape Town is the how close everything is, I live in the City Bowl and to get to places like Clifton or Camps bay beaches takes about 10minutes.

Camps Bay

We left the CBD heading up Kloof Nek Road towards Camps Bay, at the top of Kloof Nek is a turn off heading down the winding Kloof Road, this is a short road with some tight turns unfortunately it is quite short though.

If you are new to Cape Town I would recommend checking out Clifton or Camps bay beaches, they have been recognised internationally as being world class having been awarded the The Blue Flag several times. The Blue Flag is basically an award given to beaches that are kickass.

We cruised along the Camps Bay beach strip which can be really busy when tourist season is in full swing or on amazing summer days. You will find a variety of bars and restaurants here with great food and are also the perfect places to have sundowners while watching pretty people and pretty super cars rolling by.

Llandudno

We left Camps Bay and rode towards Llandudno, the main reason for our ride. Victoria Road through to Hout Bay is a very easy road to ride, besides being a great scenic route it has a number of smooth corners that one can take at decent speeds. This is a good place to practice your cornering and you will find dozens of bikes and sport cars gunning up and down these passes on sunny days.

Our basic routine for the next hour or two was to do runs to the top of Victoria road and back down again working on our lines and on our handling of the bikes. The motorists on the road were really great and allowed us to pass whenever we came up behind them, just to add our riding was respectful to other road users. :)

One of the things about being part of the biking community is that you start to see familiar faces ( or should I say bikes ) often and cool friendships are made. We bumped into two of Buell mates at the top of Victoria Road.

Hout Bay

After spending some time catching up and chatting about bikes ( of course :D ) we left to get lunch at Pakalolo down in Hout Bay. The vibe here is very chilled and the food is decent. The restaurant is usually a biker breakfast run stop before heading over Chapmans Peak.

Homeward Bound

The route back took us back along the path we had come, we did a couple more laps along the passes then stopped off about a 1.5km outside of Camps Bay along Victoria Drive at a rest stop. Locals sell various curios and food trucks park off here, it's a good place to stop off and enjoy the scenery. The massive Twelve Apostles mountain range watches over this stretch of coast, the name is derived from 12 very distinguishable sandstone buttresses.

The Sausage Embassy

If you are into authentic German cuisine I would highly recommend The Sausage Embassy food truck. We were lucky enough to bump into these guys on the way back after the ride and man their menu is so good.

The truck is run by two great people, Olaf and Diana, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that they accepted Bitcoin as a payment method which is amazing! It was really cool to have a quick chat about the coin and the blockchain.

Woah! Nice photos mate! Is that a Street Triple? What's the other motorcycle? Bike rides are the best :)

Thanks! Yeah it's a 2013 Street Triple R, such a rad bike to ride :) The other bike is a 2005 Aprilia Tuono.

Great photos! Cape town has a great motorcycling scene going on. Heard some stories from a couple of friends before. It was nice to see the pictures from you. Looking forward to more stuff! :)

Makes me want to ride in spite of the rain. Great photos and good write up.

Great post and awesome photos! Makes me want to take the day off and go for a ride!
