Marc and I are a weird couple that usually manage to have the same job. For the last two years we were working in a vegan kitchen and for five years before that we were top line cooks at a busy steakhouse in the Old Port of Montreal.
We left the steakhouse due to high levels of stress plus we were vegetarians at the time so it didn't align with our lifestyle.
We left and went vegan right away.
Our last job at the vegan company was much easier physically but after becoming supervisors we gradually realized this is not where we are supposed to be. In fact we vowed that we should never work in a punch in and out environment ever again.
We made up our minds that we would save for a year and move to Thailand where I was born.
Shortly after that decision we were faced with challenge at work which we were not willing to put up with.
So one day in haste we decided to give one months notice and leave the job. We knew we would not have enough money to get to Thailand let alone move there.
Plan B was mexico.
We made a firm decision that we will take only a few clothes and electronics which is not much and just go. We leave at the end of September.
A young co worker with the same spirit told us if we are going, he will go as well. We all had little money saved up but we would have another months wages by the time we were through. We have already left the job.
Meanwhile we felt we should ensure a plane ticket , one way of course, so we searched for the three of us and managed to find a budget airline called Interjet, where we purchased three one way tickets for approximately two hundred dollars each to Cancun so that we may say hello to some Mexican friends that I had met in the past that live close by in a town called Puerto Morelos.
Now we thought it would be best if we would reserve a place to stay for at least one month. Our co traveler did the search and found a place quite far from Puerto Morelos so we were a little disappointed however it was only two hundred and fifty dollars for an entire house strung up with hammocks and a sofa. This is on reserve for the month of October. That's okay with us. We are now excited to go to the town called Tizimin in the middle of the Yucatan Peninsula.
It seems to be a large enough town to find the basic needs including buses to various places including the upper coast where we can enjoy a beach although it's two and a half hours away by bus but apparently will cost about two dollars Canadian each way.
Our pre booking didn't end there. We decided perhaps Acapulco, a larger more built up city which I am familiar with would be more suitable for a long term stay. We actually hope not to return.
We booked a one way ticket from Cancun to Acapulco.
We have a stop in Mexico City. The cost of the flight was slightly over one hundred Canadian each.
Now we needed to get at least a month's stay in Acapulco. We should have gotten more time because it will be high season soon after and everything will be booked. We are taking our chances.
We found a place for three hundred and fifty dollars. It is in a great location closer to the older parts of the city. We have to share the house with the owner. Both of the accommodations that we rented are from Airbnb.
So lets sum up the investment so far.
For three people we have invested so far, six hundred dollars for the first flight three hundred for the second flight, one month's rent for two hundred and fifty for and another month for three hundred and fifty.
The total of our pre paid two months is fifteen hundred Canadian dollars for three people costing each of us five hundred dollars.
We are planning not to come back if possible but for anyone who has a small budget and big dreams of traveling, it can be done easily if you are adventurous and not going for a luxury style tourist vacation.

We will have our own photos after we arrive in Mexico. Stay tuned if you would like to follow our journey.
