Crossing Honshu (2) Anagomeshi
Before going to the downtown, I first decided to discover Miyajima, one of Three Views of Japan. Miyajima is located in the western area of Hiroshima bay. It’s original name is Itsukushima (厳島), but it is rather famous for the nickname Miyajima(宮島), or ‘Shrine Island’. In order to reach Miyajima from Hiroshima, you first need to take JR main line or the Electric Railway and get off at Miyajimaguchi station. I took JR to save time.
< you’re in the right place if the next station is ‘Shin-Hakushima’. >
<The destination differs between each car, so it was quite confusing.>
If you go straight towards the exit after getting off, the JR Miyajima Ferry Terminal lies in front. Before buying the ferry ticket, I went to Ueno Shop (上野商店), famous for its Anago-meshi (あなご飯), a Japanese rice dish with salt-water eel.
<'Welcome to Miyajima' - a typical greeting.>
Ueno Shop is a historied restaurant established in 1871. You can either eat in or take out ‘bento’s. I chose to take away because it’s cheaper, and I wanted to enjoy it on the island. The stock differs by size, and you might have to wait for up to fifteen minutes. I chose the regular size(¥1944) which was available right then. Before leaving, I double-checked if it is okay to take the bento on the ferry, and the cashier said it’s fine.

<Takeaways are available at the counter>
I bought a one-way ticket for the ferry because I wanted to take another course when going back to Hiroshima. I heard that the ferry approaches really close to the famous torii大鳥居 from 9:10 AM to 16:10 PM, but it did not! It still is clearly written on the homepage but I’m not sure why it didn’t do so yet.
<The torii... from far away.>
<Even the terminal had a traditional feeling.>
If you get off the ferry and go outside, there is a public park right by the shore. The sea stretched wide to the horizon, without any high buildings to block the view. I took a seat on one of the benches and was about to pull out my lunchbox, but suddenly I realized people were staring at me. There was a deer behind me glaring at my bento!
<Many students were on a field trip.>
<This shaky picture expresses my panic.>
Another one actually pushed its head towards me, dropping my camera to the ground, and I had to stuff what I was eating into my mouth as quickly as possible. Nonetheless, it was awesome. No fishy smell at all, and the soy seasoning on the rice was great.
