in travel •  7 years ago

Recently during our visit to my paternal and maternal town (will post details in separate post), I got a chance to visit a 1000 yrs old idol in a Jain temple.
This place Devgarh is situated in Pratapgarh district in Rajasthan, India.
Here I am sharing some pics I took of this historic place.

What picked my curiosity for detail is that the bell´s clapper does not appear to be cast from a single mold as the rest of the bell. It seems to have been worked by hammer. I´m guessing that the rest of the bell, which is too perfect to have been cast from an old mold is not actually from that time and got recently replaced, and the clapper is the only original part of it which remains. Nice post!

Nice observation!

Awesome work of art. How old is this temple? I saw in the photos of friends old temples in India, they do not have colors, only the decor of sculptures. In this area, do all the temples resemble this style?

Temple is also old but renovated and colored at a particular interval so it is looking colorful.

You do not know if it was recently repaired, or are the bright colors so well preserved? I know that in India, because of the climate, everything is collapsing very quickly ...

I asked authorized person in the temple, he said it is colored frequently to keep temple colorful.

Thank you, I had a feeling that I myself went there and found out everything that interests me!

The colourful pillars look so beautiful. And I think even the bell there also is from ancient times!

Hi sir, beautiful shots!! can u please enlight little more about Jainism?? I can see OM in one of the temple pic.. Does this symbol that relevant in Jainism?

Yes OM symbol is relevant in Jainism.

There is no origin of Jainism as per Jain cosmology. It has existed since eternity and will remain till eternity just like this world. According to Jain cosmology, there is a time cycle of 6 "kaals" which moves in ascending and then descending order. First 3 are "bhog-bhumi" eras in which people don't perform any tasks and their wishes are granted by Kalpavrikshas. 4th is the era in which all Tirthankaras are born and preach Jainism. 5th era is the one we live in, in which no-one can attain nirvana. 6th and the last era is one doomsday come and everything is flooded. Then the cycle reverses and goes back to 1st era in reverse order.
Certain western historians, on the other hand, trace Jainism from the teachings of Lord Parshvanatha (23rd Tirthankara) who lived in 8th-9th century BC. It was then preached further by 24th Tirthankara Mahavira in 6th century BC. Various Indian historians on the other hand trace Jainism to as back as 3000 BC, i.e., upto Indus Valley Civilisation because of the seals depicting nude saints and bulls.
