Never heard of Malaga, but it just moved up the list of places to visit. I especially like that you mentioned how friendly the people are (I hear mixed reviews about Spain). If you've been to Portugal, how would you compare the two? Also, is this just a day trip or should travelers plan to spend a couple days?

To be honest, I've heard a mix feelings about Spain too. It's hard for me to judge a book by its cover. The world is huge, every country has their own issues, but, from what I've learned, the people there are definitely some friendly people. They will just crack some jokes with you even though it's like a duck and a chicken communicating with their own languages, but, we just understand what our conversation is about and that is the best!
Unfortunately, I haven't yet make it to Portugal yet. Also, regarding your question, I've extended my stay in Malaga for a week because I am absolutely in love with the city. But, the truth is, you can't just leave Malaga for a day trip. You'll find yourself regret leaving this beautiful city for just a day.
