Thailand is a constitutional monarchy, which I find to be quite strange. Until we went there, I thought monarchies were a thing of the past. In fact, we visited the country at a sad time because the beloved king had just passed away. Thailand has seen a large increase in tourism in the past few years. Having said that, they now have a lot more amenities for tourists.
Phuket is the county's largest island and it is a popular tourist destination known for its excellent beaches, scuba diving and snorkeling. Here they have an abundance of tour packages including elephant trekking, island hopping, the Big Buddha and animal shows. The snake show in particular we found to be quite entertaining and relatively cheap. As in Mexico, bartering for prices on these packages will save you a bundle.
Bangkok is a city famous for its red light districts, the historic Grand Palace, Wat Arun, Wat Pho and its floating markets. When visiting temples, make sure you are wearing appropriate clothing (no shorts and sleeveless shirts allowed) as their dress code is very strict. However, there are vendors outside the temples selling sarongs and pants in case you need a pair. If you are interested in checking out a Muay Thai fight, this is the place to do it in. I say this because there are many places in Thailand that have mock fights as a cash grab for tourists. The main stadium in Bangkok is where the real fights happen.
