Meeting Iceland Horses and their Goofy Hair.

in travel •  7 years ago

Good evening, Steemit.  Here's a small photo collection of some Icelandic horses we saw while on our trips.  These guys are everywhere in the country.  Pretty much, once you leave Reykjavik, you're in horse country.

Now, truth be told, I'm not big on horses.  I don't DISLIKE them, but they're actually one of the few animals that creep me out.  I mean, they're massive!  I get a little nervous when I get close to one.  Their head is like the size of my torso and are basically 2,000 pounds of pure muscle.  I always feel like they're a second away from kicking my head off.  They fucked up Superman, for crying out loud!  BUT, these Icelandic horses didn't give me that nervous twinge.  First of all, they really do seem to love people!

Aside from their personality being really cool, they're small.  All of them.  They're like the size of a small pony, at best.  That really reduces the intimidation factor.  No matter where you are in the country, if you see horses out in a pasture somewhere and pull up to the fence, they come walking over to say hi.

One of the other things that's awesome about these guys is their ridiculous hairdos. lol They reminded me of every Emo kid from high school, when that craze was running wild.  Speaking of hair, another cool feature is these guys have two layers of hair (fur?) to keep them warm in Iceland's rather rigid climate.

One last cool fact about these guys to close with, is that they are one of the purest breeds of horse in the entire world.  They are serious about their horses up there.  Once a horse leaves Iceland, they are forbidden to return, in order to protect the breed/population.

lol Yeah it is. I'm not sure if the owners actually cut it, or if it jus throws all emo.

Haha maybe they have a special stylist lol

Love it! Beautiful horses 🐴

hahaha love them so fluffy. I need to get to Iceland soon!

I can not recommend taking the trip enough.

The Icelandic horses also have a unique trot that is only found in horses of their bloodline.

The definitely are beautiful.

You mean like the way they walk?? That's genetic? Wow, I did not know that.

it's got better hair than me! :P Haha.

Very robust horses and highly adapted for Icelandic climate. Very protected indeed. Have you had the chance to see the sheep? Iceland is the biggest consumer and exporter of sheep/lamb in the world. Sheep are free to roam the land as they please there.

I did! You can't miss them, actually. The first time we went was in summer and the sheep were everywhere. The second time went was in winter and there were no sheep to be seen. I asked the owner of the one B&B we stayed at where they were, and she said they all go into the "sheep houses". lol

I like animals.

Very interesting that the horses have two layers of hair to keep them warm and that once a horse leaves Iceland it cannot come back into the country.

Wow, you held out on me. I didn't see all of the horse pictures apparently. You know how much I love these little guys @customnature!
