Hiking in the U.S. - Mt. Ryan in Joshua Tree National Park, California

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

There are lots of great hikes in Joshua Tree and one of my favorites is Mt. Ryan. It is a mountain that most anyone can climb, although some will probably take more rest breaks than others. The trail goes up about 1,000 feet in a mile and a half. It is a very sun exposed hike so be sure to bring a big hat, some sunscreen, and water along. Depending on the number of breaks and pictures you stop to take along the way, allot 2-3 hours for the round trip.

After about 100 yards on the trail you will go right at a small sign that goes to Sheeps Head Pass if you go left. Then you begin to climb some steps.

Depending on the time of the year, you may see some wonderful cacti blooming.

As you climb up each rock step, be sure to keep your and eye out for rattlesnakes sunning themselves on the rocks. Using hiking poles or a staff should cause enough vibration on the ground to hopefully give them warning that you are heading their way. On the climb up on the last time I took the hike, I heard the rattle before I saw a very irritated snake at the edge of the trail.

We gave him some room and continued up, but heard several other hikers report they had sightings as well. I don't want to scare anyone off, that was the first time I had seen a snake on that trail in the three times I have climbed Mt. Ryan. You just should be aware of the possibility.

At the top, there are great views in every direction so be sure to take a camera.

What was extra special on our last hike, was that we met another little friend on the way down. He was a little smaller and seemed much less annoyed.

Have a fun and safe hike!
