The beautiful picture above was taken in the Maldives, located in the Indian Ocean.
The Maldive islands are best known for their luxurious resorts, magnificent coral-reefs and also some of the best waves in the world.
But, what we find even more interesting is a unique natural phenomenon that occurs on some of the Maldives islands.
When night comes, the sea water starts to glow.
This effect is called bioluminescence.
Bioluminescence is happening when a light is produced out of a living organism.
Inside the organism lives a bacteria that generates light when it meets oxygen.
Both the organism and bacteria live in symbiosis, meaning they both benefit from this relationship.
The bioluminescense starts when the water near a plankton starts to move.
It helps the plankton by making the predator visible and exposed to bigger predators and/or excited photographers :)

They do bioluminescent kayak tours in my area but I've yet to go on one. I'm gonna have to make that happen sooner than later.
