At First Glance - A Few Things I’ve NoticedsteemCreated with Sketch.

If this is your first time tuning in, we landed in Costa Rica 13 days ago, exactly 2,723 miles from Los Angeles, California—where we used to live.

North and Central

The main difference between here and there, so far, is the hoops. I’m accustom to jumping through hoops and signing on the dotted-line with my hands tied behind my back in order to accomplish anything. Down here, however, not so much. There’s no hoops to jump through down here, you just have to wait. The process of purchasing a vehicle, that’s a good one! As though language barriers aren’t complicated enough, add the currency exchange rate fluctuating hourly and the passing of currencies from one country to another and it’s a lengthy post all by itself. We’re still waiting for the transfer to clear, I asked the dealership if they accept #bitcoin—“unfortunately, not at this time.” We found a couple of barrios we don’t want to live, it’s nice to check those boxes too. I’m still working on those articles, as soon as they’re finished, you’ll be the first to know!

At First Glance - A few things I’ve Noticed.

We pass and get passed on the right, the left, solid yellow, double solid yellow, cops on the side of the road (with sirens on), doesn’t matter—I’m shocked there isn’t any car wrecks. Motorcycles too! Equal opportunity passing—that one might take awhile to get used to.

Banks are open seven days a week. Did you catch that? If you need to read it again, go ahead, I’ll wait. “Banks are open seven days a week.” Fascinating concept, right? The joint controlling everyone keeps their doors open 7 days a week for convenience, the way it should be! There’s a popular catch phrase in the states that’s the exact opposite of that concept—‘bankers hours.’ How do I know they’re open seven days a week down here? Because within the first two hours of our arrival, a satellite ATM ate my debit card and I had to go back to the main branch every.single.day in an attempt to physically retrieve it. Five days without my bank card—Pura Vida! @puravidaville has the same card but, nonetheless, that’s a pretty big obstacle to overcome before the first sunset. There isn’t any hoops, you just have to wait.

When I say I haven’t seen any, I mean none, zero, not one time. Two weeks ago I heard them, took pictures of them and witnessed as many as 10 chem trails at a time above my head. It’s been two weeks now, still no trails.

There isn’t any shopping carts throughout the grocery market parking lot—that’s #new! Before I continue, one of my most annoying pet peeves is those of you who don’t return shopping carts to the location where they belong. You know who you are. You might even get real close, right by the return cage but you just park it close and don’t go the extra 10 inches. Maybe you position it against a parking block or on a curb, maybe you don’t do any of those things and instead you know the people I’m talking about. Well, they don’t do that here, it’s great! Everybody knows how to return shopping carts to the location they belong—what a thoughtful, pay it forward type of gesture. Attention Costa Rican’s, thank you!

Coca Cola is everywhere, I can’t emphasize that enough! I’m pretty proud of myself for not drinking soda, I haven’t drank a soft drink for quite awhile—so much for that! Within my first few days here I drank two of them before I realized everything says Coca Cola around here, they’re everywhere! Everything is red and everything says Coca Cola. There’s 3 liter bottles down here, too, they sell them in two-packs. They got me once twice—danget!

The markets have a large selection of sugar-free chocolate and dairy-free cheese, there’s an entire section of refrigerator reserved for dairy-free products.

This one took me a couple of days to understand, it’s a tough concept for an American to grasp, you ready brother @jlsplatts? No privatized energy. Did you catch that? If you need to read it again, go ahead, I’ll wait. “No privatized energy.” I’m a retired Journeyman Wireman of 22 years, I just left California, I’m very well aware of energy and I know exactly how privatized energy operates. Just in the LA County alone I can name three energy companies: Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Edison, and Metropolitan Water District. When we arrived at our new location, off in the distance I saw wind turbines line the mountain ridge, I asked our host who’s generating and was told “the government.” I learned there isn’t any private utility companies marketing power, the government maintains all of it and because of that, rates remain low. Like I said, that one took me a few days.

Highway 58 - Tehachapi, California

So far, so great, there’s nowhere I’d rather be. We haven’t really had time to do any sight seeing or exploring yet, we’re actually trying to force our west coast mentality down their throats and get wheels, residency, shelter, you know—necessities. Their resistance to our way of thinking is why we’re down here, we need some reprogramming. Everything moves real slow down here, there’s a term for it, ‘Costa Rica Time.’ I love it! I can’t wait to get used to it.

One question, and I am being just very selfish as you are sharing a beautiful snapshot of your life, can you come by South Africa and "fix" my counter to jam it and get electricity for free?

Wow banks opened 7 days a week means interests grow constantly and the market never sleeps... Interesting,,,

You know I love it when you make an appearance over here, right? Always nice to hear from you rock star, whoever don’t love ‘love yourself’ is... I seen a dude tell you that on your page, he liked your version but he said he didn’t like the song. It took everything I had to not drop him a line like “Are you on medication?”

2, 5, 8. Eh, you know you put that on the blockchain right so in 2, 5 and 8 years from now I’m either going to be able to confirm or completely disregard your theory. See you in 2, 5, 8 homie. 😉

Is it just me or was that last sentence cooler than the other side of your pillow??

Is it just me or was that pillow comment.... nevermind.

Banks! F’ing banks. This really isn’t the space. Yeah, the market wouldn’t sleep I guess. Until I no longer need to rely on one, the least they could do is keep their doors open. It’s the bank that is making my transactions practically impossible dude, not humans. I believe that, in general, humans instinctually care for one another and don’t need governed. I could forever here, Ed.

What I would suggest is—jump one leg. Leave the other leg hot going to the quiet side of your panel, jump the noisy side of the panel that has the A/C, electric water, lights oven, the expensive stuff. Balance the load properly, branches, rooms, exterior lights, etc. on the energized side so the meter still turns, just at a fraction of the speed. Smart meters are a little different, do the exact same thing and only jump the expensive side of the panel but you have to trick the meter and make it think it’s still feeding both sides. Otherwise, it won’t turn at all and that’s the last thing you want! It just requires an extra 12 inch piece of 1/0. I would strongly recommend against this if someone had been in the house longer than a year. But say, for example, new guy moves into a house and does it before he turns on the A/C, see where I’m going? You’ll never draw attention to yourself. Naahhh.... I have no idea. 🤔

Thanks for stopping by @edprivat.

It took everything I had to not drop him a line like “Are you on medication?

Man i think it takes a lot of courage in 2019 to admit you love Justin Bieber's song, I think you are comfortable enough with you emotions.

Is it just me or was that pillow comment

Hahahahha i can't help but laughing cause it made me think of something

Until I no longer need to rely on one, the least they could do is keep their doors open

Make your money work Artie!

It’s the bank that is making my transactions practically impossible dude, not humans

Don't worry I know that feeling, it's because while they're stalling your money, it's being invested somewhere else and they making profit...

I have no idea. 🤔

Me neither!!! Let me go give it a try

Did you just one-up my coolest side of the pillow comment?! You totally did!

Good one. 👍🏿

I’m not exaggerating, I could walk you through it over the phone. It only took me a couple of decades but I actually pride myself in being able to build/repair etc electrical work via telephone.

I’m really forcing myself to leave the banking comments blank <—it’s F’ing tough!

edit we just received confirmation of the transfer, looks like we’ll be avoiding rental fees today.

Wooohoooo 😁

This kinda makes me think about moving 😄. The power thing is nuts and i guess so are the passing lanes. Sounds very exciting and cant wait for some more posts :).

Always Coca Cola

Eh, good morning buenos dias, weird! Little things, right? Man, and check this out, everyone says hi, “hola” or “buenas,” everyone! Could you imagine being surrounded by strangers at home and everyone talks to you? “Hi!” “Hello!”...with a smile on their face. Kids, elderly, young/old, doesn’t matter.

Utility rates are monopolized. Wait, monopolized and the rates are cheap?! What a great idea! I’ve never heard of such a thing. Where I come from.. monopolized means capitalism someone’s hiking the rates, sound familiar?

I’ll try to grab some pictures of Coca Cola advertisements for you today, a blind guy could capture images, really, just point and shoot. Red everything, Coca Cola everything.

Thanks for stopping by @weirdheadaches.

😎😎😎 Buenas

Alright...how much to they pay per hour..benefits...Wait hold up!! I need a union. Lol. I bet they have some wild ways of getting Linework done down there. If it’s governement, they should have pretty good equipment I would think??? We. I know our government has top of the line stuff. Lol.

Driving down there sound like it would be a blast!!! Doesn’t leave much room for stupid drivers now does it. Gotta be on high alert at all times. I think I could fit in quite nicely down there. Drive how ever you want, cheap electric rates, beautiful weather, cheap homes, and I know a couple Americans that can show me the ropes. Dah ha ha.
Dude thanks for taking on a little trip into your new neck of the woods jungle...wait it is kind of jungley down there isn’t it??
Monkeys...are they monkeys down there running all over the place?? Maybe I am thinking of some place different.

Dude when I get don’t changing all these street lights out, they will be able to see this place from the international space station. HAHAHAH

Doesn’t leave much room for stupid drivers now does it. Gotta be on high alert at all times.

Eh, I’m impressed, you couldn’t be more precise, that’s exactly what it is. One of our hosts explained that to me, the significance of the wild west driving, it does cause everyone to be on high alert and that’s exactly why there aren’t any car wrecks. Good one, Splatts, they needed to explain that one to me.

I know a couple Americans that can show me the ropes.

Bet your.... you do!

Oh yeah, monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, all kinda wild life, once I begin collecting images, you know I’ll hook you up. I can’t make this up, just 15 minutes ago we had to escort a gray bird to an open window so it would fly out of the house we’re staying in. Eh, I don’t know how she booked this joint, by the way, it’s super cheap and it’s massive! Walking from one side of the house to the other actually sucks.

When I get done changing all these street lights out.

There’s gonna be a bunch of flipped pissed off birds! 😉 Eh man, my pleasure for showing you our new place, we’re just getting started. So long as you appreciate em, I’ll keep me coming. Thank you brother! Now about that equipment..

Oh my goodness! Eh, linemen are nuts, I’ve never suggested otherwise. Honestly, I haven’t got a good look at the transmission lines, not yet anyway, but oh my goodness you should see some of these “switch yards.” I think a clearance should be authorized just to look at them!! Insane. I’ll grab some images some time. And check this out, at the second place we stayed, I guess something happened on the highway, a pole got hit or went down or something? Eh, en entire grid went out! The whole thing.. neighborhoods, markets, commercial, street lights, done! Not just a block or a few city blocks. AS FAR as you could see!! Hahaha. The neighbordhood turned into a huge party, everyone was in the streets drinking and partying and stuff until the lights came on about four hours later. Even FACP’s in the complex we were staying at were in alarm mode.... “Costa Rican time.” Have you ever heard of losing power to the fire controls for 4 hours?! I love it.

Thanks for stopping by @jlsplatts and thanks for drawing this winded response out of me. 👍🏿

The power is out so you might as well have a block party!! I like where their heads are at. That is epic!!!

I remember reading you were heading to Costa Rica at some point, and now you've really done it, @dandays! There's so much to know here. Maybe you've already written about it. Like, was it you or @puravidaville who first thought about leaving the country, and then, in searching where to go and how to do it, why did you end up with Costa Rica?

I've looked at both Belize and Costa Rica before. Very beautiful places, but I've yet to move myself and my wife to either place.

You're on Latino time, now, dude. It happens when it happens.

I've had some experience driving in Mexico, which, from the sound of it, is similar to what you're experiencing. The first time I had the family in a car just south of the border in Tijuana and we were trying to get to my wife's uncle's shop or some such thing, and we had to go through a three lane roundabout to get there.

It took forever for me to feel safe to get into the roundabout. Meanwhile, people behind me were passing and getting into the stupid thing! Then, once I finally got in, I had people switching lanes in front me and behind me all at once trying to get to where they were wanting to go. It could have very well have been choreographed ahead of time for all I knew. I just couldn't get the timing and the rhythm down. Finally, I just kind of lowered my head and bulled my way out of there.

Another time was in a rented car with a friend from work driving around the Merida area of the Yucatan while on vacation. That worked out great. Villages and hardly any cars on the road, though we had narrower streets and slower speeds.

The third was with my wife in the Cancun area heading down to Tulum. That one had more cars, but not as bad as Tijuana, though I was watching out for the police cars. Fortunately, our rental looked too beat up to be driven by tourists, so we didn't have to worry about them, either. :)

All kinds of things are going to change for the two of you. Holy cow. :)

Long time, no see, this sure is a pleasant surprise. God bless you, sir, happy 2019, I hope you and the Mrs. are having the best year ever. Thank you for all of the kind words and sharing those stories. I’m not a big fan of roundabouts either, not gonna sugar coat it! Eh, my wife calls them “social experiments.” Ha!!

We’ve been here in the past, we actually did our honeymoon here once, too, back in 2016 we spent a month here and that time we made the decision—‘let’s move there,’ everything will work out the way it’s supposed to. 2 years, 2 weeks, 5 days is how long it takes to get a honorable release from the feds. Could you imagine?? A common question during our being released was “did you sell all your furniture?” I would say, “could you imagine breaking your arm 3,000 miles away without ‘insurance’ and don’t speak the language?”....suddenly is furniture is what it is—nothing. 😉

I look forward to posting all of the various things we get ourselves out of, sir. We both really love it here. My best way to describe it is people don’t care what you do here, they only care about you. I’m used to “what do you do?” “Where do you work?” <- Common questions. You won’t get that here, all you’ll get here is Hola or Pura Vida. People ask who you are around here, not what you do.

Having grown up in L.A., I’ve been all through Tijuana and down into Ensanada, Rosarito, Baja etc. since forever. I’ve never seen any driving like this!! “Woah!”

Thanks for stopping by @glenalbrethsen, great to hear from you again, don’t be a stranger!

Just leaving a comment as a book mark so I remember this post later

🤔 This is your friendly reminder to pass back through. But in case you don’t..

Thanks for stopping by @osint.

I had not forgotten! It was just a longer post and I've been rushed. Costa Rica is a retirement fantasy for me. Along with many other places. I've never been, but I have experienced a handful of similar places. At least based off of what you describe. The driving laws and lack there of seem terrifying to me, but the people never even flinch. It is a liberating feeling not having to worry about breaking a very minute driving law. Have you experienced anyone drinking and driving? That was a normal practice at a few places. "We do not have your high way patrol. We just hold the cup under the window and it is safe."

Eh, how’s it going? I’m glad you made it back. I have not witnessed any drunk driving myself, everyone seems to be hands on the wheel around here. Yes, retirement fantasy, well said!

I think if you got yourself down here as soon as possible and just engulfed yourself in the culture for 30 days you’ll be “so this is why dandays moved.” 👍🏿

Thanks for stopping by @osint.

I have no doubt in that! Maybe one day I'll make it over! I have not had a chance yet, but I look forward to reading over your other posts. All of these posts from all over the world have me itching for something new.

howdy sir dandays! very interesting and sorry I missed the voting limit on this one but I'm on to the next one. So you're back to being a Coke addict now? lol.

No, no Coke! They’re everywhere around here, Janton.

You think this whole platform isn’t aware of your engagement activity? I sure am. I completely understand why it would take you longer than a week to get to an article, you don’t ever have to apologize, I’m just glad you made time to read what I’m saying.

Thanks for stopping by @janton.

howdy sir danday! oh I misunderstood, I thought you said you were back on the sauce! lol...actually we and the people we know are just a niche. I meet people everyday who I've never seen and they've never seen me and they've never heard of anything like the Engagement League, we are a very small group with a few hundred members out of what..even if steemit is down to 10,000 active users that makes us nothing much. lol. I'm like a nat on a Bison!
