Abandoned - Rose Island Amusement Park

Rose Island Amusement Park.jpg

The tour of the abandoned Rose Island Amusement Park wraps up our vacation that we took this past July. I had first learned about Rose Island on YouTube and then found out it was right here in Indiana. I wanted to go see it for about a year before our vacation.

Prior to Rose Island being purchased by David Rose, there were hundreds of picnic tables spread around the property. It is said that many people used to go there to have picnics. I should add that, even though it is called Rose Island, the land is actually a peninsula.

David Rose purchased Rose Island in 1923. He added an amusement park, hotel, and a swimming pool to the property. In 1937, a 10 foot deep flood damaged the park so badly they could not repair it. The great depression had already hurt the business but the flood did it in.

Before land was given to the Charlestown State Park, the army used it as the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant. It is my understanding that the army cleared out most of what remained of the amusement park.

There are a few things left though. The most intact build is the Rose Island Fountain. I wish I could see a photo of it in its hay day. I can not imagine what it looked when it was new.

This is what remains of the swim suit rental building.

The pool is still amazingly in tact. Although, it has been filled in. They said it was still in working condition in the 1980's.

These arches have also survived and they run across part of the trail that goes through the park.

And that concludes the vacation videos from this past July. If you wish to see the tour as we did please enjoy the video.

That was totally awesome Deb!! dtube cut out on me two minutes from the end but I caught the rest on your other channel!! ❤

D-Tube must be having problems I am not aware of. I think up to 3 of my videos are just gone now. Thanks for going over there to finish it. xoxo

It was a pleasure!! I really enjoyed it!

This was a neat place to visit.

This must have been something in its hay day! Even before, I could just imagine the 100's of picnic tables scattered through the trees. That fountain must have been amazing. Too bad they filled in the pool. The flood sure did a lot of damage. I wonder what it would cost today to restore the park to it's original glory?

I would have loved to see it as far back as the picnic tables too. I'm not sure they would since the flood technically could occur again. Although, you'd think we have found ways to avoid that now days.

Even though I hate to see places that are abandoned, they can be awesome to walk through and observe the ruins.

I agree.

As a dutch person it is pretty strange and interesting to see a plot of land can stay abandoned for so long... we plan almost every inch of our country and finding something taken by time is rare. It has its own beauty because of that. Although it would be better if it was in its original state.

I suspect they have not done anything else to it because it has the potential to flood again. That said though, we do have vast areas here in the US that are abandon or untouched. I'd love to have seen it in its original state.

Yes, I can understand that. I think it would be very interesting to see that places

Sad to see such beautiful places fall to ruin. Enjoyed your visit there, Deb @debralee. Resteemed.

It is a shame. It makes me wonder what it would have been today if the flood had not occurred. Thanks @redheadpei! :)

The place is still beautiful even though it is abandoned. Thanx for sharing its history.

It really was a wonder to walk through. We enjoyed it.

Cool when you can learn about the history of an area you live by.

It really was neat to learn about.

Nice tour thank you. You cant help but to feel sad for how it all panned out. some people get the breaks in buisness and others struggle.
It's nice some history is preserved.

Thanks! Yeah, its a shame the flood did the place in and the military cleared out much of what was left.

What an amazing place and it is so sad that no one or state government taking over the care of it! I like how to take photos of the signs and show the overall of the place also!

Charlestown State Park is trying to preserve what is left of it. It's a shame the military tore so much down.

Wouldn't you just like to be able to travel back in time and enjoy it when it was an amusement park. I would love that:)

I would too, I'd even like to see it when it was just full of picnic tables. :D

It was a really nice place. It looks like a nice trip

Thank you.

ugh it seems like a great place to spend a lovely sunday. so sad it is abandoned. Great post @debralee

Thanks @skullangs! I would have loved to taken the entire tour but they cut us short because the heat index was 105 F that day.

So sad it was abandoned, the place was beautiful

It is too bad, as far as I know it has not flooded since.
