Why Portmeirion?

Since I joined Steemit, I wanted to write a series of articles featuring the beautiful village of Portmeirion because it's my favourite place on earth.

I want to cover Portmerion's history, the Italian style buildings and 'Six of One - The Prisoner Society' among all the other things that make it such a special place to me.

I decided the best way to do it is a mini series of articles. I hope some Steemians will be inspired to go to Portmeirion.

A Brief History of Portmeirion

Portmeirion is a small village with a hotel and cottages that can be rented. The buildings are mainly of an Italian style of architecture painted in attractive shades of colour as can be seen in the picture above.

The village is along the North Wales coast near the town of Porthmadog. The River Dwyryd surges past Portmeirion. I recently painted this picture for a Steemit competition:

When the tide is out the bed of River Dwyryd is a sandy paradise.

Sir Clough Williams-Ellis

Originally on site there was a mansion built in about 1840. In 1925 it became the Portmeirion Village hotel. It's been extensively modernised since then.

Sir Clough Williams-Ellis was an architect who took over the Portmeirion estate. He'd had a lifelong dream of building an Italian style village in G.B.. He had searched for suitable sites and settled on Portmeirion which turned out to be ideal. He designed the village and supervised its building.

He had a very distinctive style of dress as you can see from the photo above. He always dressed this way and could often be seen hanging out in the village back in the day. I wished I could have met him because he made his dream a reality and I admire that so much. Unfortunately he died in 1978.

So that's an introduction to Portmeirion. Next article I'll talk about the village features.

Please visit if you get the chance. It's a unique place!

Cool post, hadn't heard of Portmeirion (except in your painting, that is). Keep the articles coming - we once had plans for a holiday in Wales, something came between it, but it's still on our short-list :)

Thank you for your comment.

NICE
