The Shawshank Redemption Filming Location

Hello Steemians!
Have you ever seen the movie The Shawshank Redemption? What about Air Force One? Did you know that both of these movies were shot in rural Ohio?

History
The Ohio State Reformatory, located in Mansfield, Ohio was built in 1834, and at its height held 5,235 prisoners. As shown by the picture below, the Reformatory has amazing architecture, and looks much more like a castle than a prison. Built as a "middle ground" between the Ohio State Penitentiary and a corrective school for young boys, the reformatory held light offenders, and those who were too old to go to the corrective school. This prison would have prevented a 16 year old pickpocket mingling with murders and rapists. Inside the prison walls was everything from a farm to a shoe factory, allowing the prison to be mostly self sufficient. The peace was disturbed when a fire at the Ohio State Penitentiary sent many prisoners to the reformatory. At times, the conditions were so cramped and overall terrible that prisoners would beg to return to the Penitentiary. Most of The Shawshank Redemption was shot here, as well as the prisoner release scene in Air Force One.

Alleged Haunting
Featured on several ghost hunting shows, The Ohio State Reformatory is considered to be one of the most haunted places in the U.S. The Reformatory even offers several "Paranormal Programs" which take you on an overnight journey through the prison, with some leaving you alone for exploration. I visited the Reformatory a couple of weekends ago (in the daylight) and I must say that the place is very eerie.

If you are ever in the area, this place is a must see.
