Mackinac Island A National Historic Landmark

in travel •  7 years ago

Enjoying a beautiful morning walk on Mackinac Island in Lake Huron. Arch Rock is a favorite stopping point. The island doesn't allow vehicles so all traffic is by foot, bike or horse-drawn carriage. Once a very culturally significant location for the Native Americans- a spiritual place, then taken over by the British during European colonization, then became a fur trading post. For many years the heritage of the island focused on the fort, but recently there has a bigger push to acknowledge the Odawa heritage, and many stopping points around the island give information on this strong history. !
