Was fortunate enough to travel to Nicaragua. Boating on this beautiful freshwater lake surrounded by volcanoes was interesting. The guide made it clear if we wanted to buy an island a sale could be made. Pointing out the homes built by foreigners, yet seemingly abandoned he would be happy to put you in touch with the right people.
Nico's living on islands show a different side of life than what the tour guide was selling. Coming from the Great Lake State of Michigan we pride ourselves in our clean water and work hard to get that message out to all who use the waters. It was hard to see people washing their clothes and distributing garbage and sewage into the clean waters. The guides perspective was the water was always flowing, thus it remains fresh. I tend to disagree. Then we see the fishing for tilapia happening from dugout canoes. Toss the net in, pull it up with a dozen or so fish. The water birds were spectacular, and fun to see the yellow warblers that soon migrate back to Northern Michigan.
