Come with me to discover the wonderful Indonesia, a hidden gem

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

From all the countries I've visited, Indonesia is one of the most incredible ones! It has a mix of characteristics that make it unique:

  • Amazing variety of landscapes
  • Great (and strange sometimes :-)) food
  • Extremely nice people
  • Secure and easy to move around
  • Cheap, cheap, cheap
  • The best beaches, the most extraordinary vulcanos and the most interesting old towns

Let me show you some of the hidden gems I found there.

I started my trip in Jakarta, the capital of the country, which is the second largest urban agglomeration in the world, with population of 30 million inhabitants! As all the huge cities in the developing countries you can find everything you want there, and in the most unexpected ways, from transportation to national goods :-)

As probably it'll be your entry point to the country (unless you fly direct to Bali), it's worth a couple of days to feel the city.

From there I moved to Bali, as I wanted to take an advanced diving course, which I have to say it's 100% recommendable! Bali is an amazing island (from the more than seventeen thousand islands there are in Indonesia!!!).

There I rented a little humble house for two in a fisher village for 10$ a day, where the owner of the house came everyday to cook us wonderful banana pancakes for breakfast :-) I also rented a little motorcycle and I was able to visit many sides of the island, and many tributes to Budha, as this one in the top of a mountain

One of the main cities of Bali is Ubud, which is called the Bali’s spiritual heart and it’s known for its artistic outpouring of talented dancers, musicians, artists and craftspeople. From Bali I moved back to the island of Java, and visited Yogyakarta, the second most crowded city of the country. From there I went to Borobudur, where you could see one of the most beautiful sunrises I've ever seen, sorounded by Budhas and amazing views. Borobudur is a Unesco-listed ninth-century temple.

Back to Jakarta to continue my trip I visited Kota Tua Jakarta ("Jakarta Old Town"), officially known as Kota Tua. It's a neighborhood comprising the original downtown area of Jakarta and it's full of life, colours and strange mixes of buildings and trees :-)

Don't forget to clean the floor or you house could finish like this one!

In conclusion, there is no better place where to take a break, see the nice way of life and find your equilibrium :-)
