Dolphin Lamp Standards on the Thames Embankment

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

Alongside the Thames Embankment in London you can find the so-called Dolphin Lamp Standards. Beautiful lamp posts that were constructed in the end of the nineteenth century. In the base of the lamp post you see two dolphins or sturgeons. From the center rises a column that ends in a glass sphere that provides the electric light. On top is a crown.

)

The lamps were designed by George John Vulliamy and based on the Fontana del Nettuno in Rome. I took the photos when we were in London in 2011. When you walk over the embankment you can hardly miss these wonderful and well-crafted lamp posts. They really catch you eye.
