St. George and the dragon - Stockholm

in travel •  7 years ago

This week we visited Stockholm and as always when we come in an old city we also wanted to vist a church or cathedral. A famous one in Stockholm is the Storkyrkan which is located in Gemla Stan, the Old City. It is a beautiful cathedral that is well - known for the sculpture of St.Georg and the dragon. It was carved out of a big piece if oak by Berndt Notke of Lübcek. The consecration was in the year 1489 as an altar for the shrine of St. George.

The stories goes that the dragon demanded human offerings from the town of Selene in Lybia. One day the daughter was to be sacrified but St. George promised to slay the dragon if all people in the city converted to christianity. And so it happened.
