Costa Rica Day 3 - Playa Hermosa, Jaco

in travel •  7 years ago

I forgot to thank @zacharylutes for the recommendation to check out Playa Hermosa, Jaco as a surfing spot in Costa Rica. Unfortunately, I was not able to surf because my wrist is injured from too much computer time. I'm hoping time away from hammering away on my keyboard and mouse will help it heal. You'll notice I have an arm brace on in some photos.

The one good thing that came out of not being able to surf was that we got to sleep in without any worry. Yay!

We woke up at about 10:00am and headed out to soak in the sun right away. Wowsa was it ever hot! Far to hot for people from Canada. I had acclimatized my skin to the sun using sun beds before leaving home but my mom had not. Not only was the sun uber strong but the sand was extremely HOT!

We had to get out feet in the water as fast as possible. You'll see in the image below that the sand on the beach is black. This is why it was so hot! According to Wikipedia, black sand is made when lava hits sea water. That's pretty darn cool. Since the heat had obviously kicked our butts we decided to call an Uber and go into Jaco and get some lunch and groceries.

Here are some images of our lunch at the Taco Bar which I would highly recommend to anyone visiting.

After lunch we went for a walk down the main strip of Jaco. I tried to ignore the gentleman's clubs and all the massage/spa places but still it had a less than attractive vibe to it. I am not a big fan of downtown Los Cabo, Mexico either...they're pretty comparable vibes. Plus the people working at the stores weren't sure if they liked tourists. Most seemed indifferent us, once in awhile someone was friendly.

The last consulting gig I finished up (Dec 2017) was in the coffee industry. I got to flash learn everything there was to know about coffee so when I saw this Monkey Poop Coffee shop we had to go in.

Turns out Monkey Poop is just a brand name...the coffee is regular coffee from coffee beans from a coffee farm. Roasted the same way as any other coffee... alrighty? I got a bag of Monkey Poop Coffee anyhow to bring to my old coworkers. I think they'll get a kick out of it.

I also wanted to include this image of what the washing machine looked like when my mom washed the bag she bought. When she bought the bag in Jaco it started transferring dye onto her arms, legs, feet, really anything the bag touched. After a few washes it stopped transferring dye but it looks like a very different bag now!

Looks like was a nice trip!

It's been really great so far! Thanks for reading :)

Hi, I've been to Costa Rica myself several times. The dentist's there are awesome too. My next adventure there is to head into the jungles.

Good to know about the dentists. We're in Manzanillo right now which is 20 mins from the Panama border on the Caribbean side. People mostly use bikes to get around. It's super cool if you are looking for a jungle spot. We used Caribe Shuttle to take us here :) About 5 - 6 hours from San Jose.

I visited Costa Rica several years ago and I loved it! Pura Vida!!

Pura Vida is right!

Costa Rica is such a nice place to visit, I love it.

Me as well. I'm sure I'll be back and thanks for reading and commenting. :)

This is beautiful, when you have peace of mind and a serene environs you have everything.

I agree... except I also need wifi.......which has been shotty since we left Jaco.

Cool pics, I went to Costa Rica when i was a child, i visited Playa Tambor. It's a beautiful place too. Hope you recover soon of your injured wrist.

I think I've heard of Playa Tambor... I think it was recommended by a friend as well. Maybe next time..
Thanks for the get well wishes. It will be better soon I hope. <3

Food is a must!

Thanks for sharing your travels! This spot has always been on my bucket list!! Hope you enjoy your vacation :)

Hi @tspink, I'd highly recommend Costa Rica. We're on the Caribbean side right now which I'll also post about and it is out of control cool as well. We really lucked out again with our accommodation and the weather has been fantastic as well. What other spots are on your bucket list?

NICE!!
Costa Rica is beautiful.

It is :D Thanks for the comment!

Coffee is energy! Boom energy!

I love travel too....Costa Rica is a beautiful place

I'm thinking Japan next maybe. Have you been?

nice history, and u are beautiful

Thanks! We've had a great time so far!

Nice work! Thank you for sharing those beautiful pictures! I heard that Costa Rica is a very nice country! I heard that the coffee there is one of the best in the world if not the best! I heard that it is a very beautiful and peaceful country that does not need and does not have an army :) ! I heard that there is a small region in Costa Rica called Nicoy Peninsula which one of the 5 Blue Zones!!! Blue Zones are small regions with the highest concentration of older people in the world.

I look forward to more pictures and more stories! :)

Thanks for your reply! The best coffee beans are grown here but unfortunately the best coffee is not brewed here. The beans are exported to the rest of the world, where they are roasted and then sold. The starting point for some of the best coffee is definitely here though :)

One of our tour guide was mentioning no army here. He said the last war was 1820? Some history buffs tried to correct him but he stood pretty firm with that date...it could have been 1920 thinking about it now...

Aw darn... I wish I knew about the blue zone, my mom would have loved to check it out!

Thanks again for the coomment!

I apologize for replying so late I had a problem with my Steemit account and I couldn't post.

"he best coffee beans are grown here but unfortunately the best coffee is not brewed here. The beans are exported to the rest of the world, where they are roasted and then sold." That's so saaaad Costa Rica people should enjoy their own coffee :( . Besides if the coffee is being sold locally it makes the local community richer. This is what I called the pervasive effect of globalization it is quite sad really :(.

I think that after 1820 Costa Rica had an issue in the 1900 years like something like a coup d'etat or like a small civil war. Then the country became very poor and then the government could not afford to spend that much money on army so they decided to abolish the army. I believe that if they are threatened by some other country they are protected by the U.S. if I am not mistaken.

Yeah may be you can go visit the Blue zone some other time but you definitely have to visit it :). People grow their food locally their and they are very family oriented :)

Have a nice vacation! P. S. Wrist pain from the computer looks like our century biggest pain😅

Thanks! So true on the wrist pain... I'm thinking of switching to vocational... what do you think?

I'd love to go to Costa Rica one day, loving the sun and beach. Been to Maldives few months ago and I miss it everyday. I made a video of my trip check it out @gummasplanet.

I've heard great thing about the Maldives! That's amazing that you have been there. Looks very nice ^^

On my bucket list, I hear there is quite an eco conscious community coming together there also? Thanks for sharing your experience.

I was on Bus heading to Jaco Beach from San Jose, and even the native Costa Ricans are in awe of their country as well, as we passed places along the way.

@automan, where did you stay in Jaco? Did you do any tours?

So I left San Jose and the bus took like 3 hours to get there, get to Jaco and find out the last bus leaves back to San Jose in 35 minutes, so I made the mistake of taking the bus back, probably missing a fun night. Next time I'll stay.

I want to visit South of Jaco, 4x4, get into the jungle and walk a little.

Oh yes @tonysawyers33 Super eco conscious. It makes sense since you live so much more with nature and wildlife here. Geckos to kill the termites and bats to eat the mosquitos...stuff like that seem more popular here than raid. Also you never put toilet paper in the toilet...sometimes there's even a rinse station....

Jaco rocks. I go there a lot to surf and shore fish. The nicest places on Jaco are either ones of the left or right ends of the beach near the rocks at either side of the beach.

when the titty pics coming
