Enveng's Istanbul Trip #7 - Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) ⭐️

in travel •  3 years ago  (edited)

Hi Steemians ⭐️ Istanbul, one of the most crowded cities in the world, is also the heart of shopping 🛍 There are so many malls and shops in this city. But there is such a bazaar that it ranks number one with its historical background and product capacity. I am in this bazaar that is Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, today 😍

First of all, I am sharing a photo of the bazaar's roof to show what kind of historical texture and size this bazaar has 🌟

The construction of the Grand Bazaar was started by Fatih Sultan Mehmet (Mehmet the Conqueror) in 1461. Grand Bazaar is 560 years old. The Grand Bazaar, located in the center of Istanbul, is one of the world's largest bazaar and oldest covered bazaars. There are approximately 4,000 shops in the Grand Bazaar. Its daily visitors are around 500,000 at its peak time.

This bazaar has also hosted a unique scene from a very famous movie. I added the video of that scene, you will remember it immediately when you watch it. The dangerous motorcycle scenes of the James Bond Skyfall movie in Istanbul were shot in the Grand Bazaar. This scene, which was shot in 2012, was also subjected to many justified criticisms. Because this bazaar is a historical building. The already worn roof was restored in 2016. Let's watch it again.

Now, let's get inside this wonderful bazaar. Grand Bazaar has 11 gates. I attached two of them.

There are many herbalists in the Grand Bazaar. The majority of herbalists in Istanbul are located in the Egyptian Bazaar and the Grand Bazaar. After 1850, they were gradually closed due to the increase of pharmacies in Istanbul. Old herbalists generally serve as spice sellers today. Many herbalist shops in the Grand Bazaar sell various soaps, massage oils, and aromatic oils.

Grand Bazaar is popular with Jewelry Stores. When the Ottoman Empire was strong, precious stones and metals to be used in jewelry were easily provided. During this period, jewelers from different countries came to Istanbul. Thus, jewelery production in this region has gradually diversified and enriched. For this reason, when the Grand Bazaar is mentioned, jewelry stores come to mind 👑

Photographing of some stores was prohibited. I took photos from a few non-ban stores. I asked the jeweler the average price of the thickly embroidered bracelets below. He said that one of the bracelets is on average 80,000 Turkish Liras (9,611 USD). These are very valuable stores ✨

The Grand Bazaar is quite famous for leather and bags. There are ready-made bags as well as handcrafted bags. Especially since handmade bags are unique, we do not see the same in another one. This situation can make someone feel special. The value of the handmade carpets sold in the Grand Bazaar is determined according to the craftsmanship and antiquity. It takes 100 – 150 years for a carpet to be considered an antique.

The Grand Bazaar has an important place in silverwork. It is like an art center with necklaces, animal figures, and earring designs.

The best ones of tiles made in both traditional and contemporary styles can be found in the Grand Bazaar.

Glass lamps and chandeliers with creative designs are dazzling ✨ You can find lamps in many types, models, and colors.

I would also like to talk about the evil eye bead that I see quite often in the bazaar. The evil eye bead is a bead that is believed to protect people from bad energy. It is a widely used and loved accessory in Turkey.

It is not my first visit to the Grand Bazaar and it won't be the last. I love the historical atmosphere, crowdedness, and energy of this bazaar 💕

While writing about such wonderful city tours you can make YouTube videos as well :)

I am very happy to hear it from you, thank you so much 🤗 Actually, I love traveling and sharing experiences on vacation, so I would like to be active on YouTube with my travel content. Maybe I can do it one day 😊

Great! You have a subscriber already :) I'm quite sure that your channel will be a success.

My nephew works in the prop department in the tv and movie industry. When you watch that chase scene, sometimes the prop people will take an entire day to stage an area that the motorcycle will flash through in a second. I don't have anything of him working on a set, but this is what he looked like a few years ago.

I prefer your poses but he has a rainbow coming out of his head.

Yep, I watched in a documentary that this job requires a lot of efforts. Btw, your nephew should be on-camera acting, he's so cool 😎👍

Beautiful place, hope I can visit there one day.

Yes, it is. I recommend not only this bazaar but also whole İstanbul. I hope you can go there in a short time 🤗
