Day Trip to Kaatiala Quarry, Finland

Continuing on my Get to Know Your Own Country Better -mission, I tagged along to my parents 27th wedding anniversary trip to scuba diving in to an old quarry in Southern Ostrobothnia. Mind you, I don't dive, I just enjoyed the weather and beautiful scenery with my camera, while my parents dived.

My day did not start out good, as I had planned on shooting all weekend but of course forgot my camera charger home some 150 kilometers away. I was so pissed at myself. Obviously there are no stores that sell camera equipment in a 100 kilometer radius, but luckily dad agreed to take a little detour to this huge shopping center where we found the most gimmicky charger ever. It's one of those "Charge all your batteries with this one wonderful devise", and you have to fiddle with it for 10 minutes to start charging, but it did do the job finally and now you can feast your eyes on these pictures.

Kaatiala is an old quarry where they used to mine feldspar and quartz (weirdly no crypto mining), but they closed their operations in 1968. After that the quarry naturally filled with clear water and has since been popular among divers. The waters in Finland are mostly dark and not that deep so an old quarry is a great place to dive. I believe the max depth in Kaatiala is something like 40 meters, if you go on to the caves.

I really wish I had a polarized filter to minimize the reflections on the surface of the water.

Ahhhh, such a rare sight in Finland, clear waters with my favourite shades of blue and green.

Let me know how you like these, and if you'd to see more random parts of Finnish nature.

Such beautiful shots what an amazing place I like you wouldnt have dived would have been out taking photos

what a night mare forgetting the charger so glad you were able to get one

Beautiful country. I love nature and I'm a diver. It must be awesome to dive in a clear quarry like that. I have dove in the Caribbean but quarries around me are all murky

Yes they did like it a lot! Though the water is really cold so you have to have a dry suit.

Love scuba diving. Must have been great experience for your parents. Interesting things to see in that quarry, I bet. Cool pictures and refreshing content. Continue writing good post as I know you will.

Yes they really enjoyed it. Thank you and I will! :)

Love your work. Can' t wait till your next post.

Amazing!! I really want to go to Finland :) Dropped a follow and look forward to seeing more of Finland :)

this seems to be a really nice place thanks a lot for sharing and keep on posting ;)

Only been to northern Finland (Kaaresuvanto) at Christmas time - everything covered in white! So your pictures show a different place in the summer - thanks @evenuncovered

Hehe, sometimes we have this thing called summer, it's short and unpredictable, but when it's good it's really good :)

I love it... how clean is the water? When I was in Sweden (I'll post the story soon I promise) many of the lakes were so clean you could drink the water without a filter...

That is a bit of a controvertial topic and it has a lot of variables. I don't think it's recommented but it's not like you are gonna die from drinking from the lake :D

You are blessed to love in such a beautiful place...

As am I.

👌😁🤗👍

Good for us :)

Amazing quality of photos. Wondering what the camera is you're using?

Thank you! I use a Nikon D7200 and these pictures were taken just with the 18-55mm kit lens.

Thanks for that info! Makes me think I should really look into buying a proper camera instead of just using my phone ;)

Pretty much any DSLR-camera will be better than taking pictures with your phone :D though there is always the hassle with having to carry a huge camera with you.

Yes, i would expect so. These days phone cameras seem to be pretty good. But I was particular impressed with those photos - maybe due to sensor size, or maybe due to less compression - either way, very nice.

So nice

beautiful scenery, so colourful too

beautiful pictures !

I really enjoyed reading your post. The photos are amazing. Excited to read your new article. Followed and upvoted: )
will be pleased if you will visit my page and leave some comments @beachgirl

I would love to see more photos. I've always wondered about Finland. I heard it was beautiful, but that's rediculous:). More please.

I'm very glad to hear you enjoyed these. I'll obviously show only the pretty parts of Finland ;)

Wow, the water is like a dream, so beautiful & your photography is excellent! upvoted @roused

Wow, really beautiful. I'm intrigued by Scandanavia. I can't spell today, apparently. I want to go there one day for Christmas and ride a sleigh pulled by reindeers.

Haha what a wonderful dream :D hope you get to experience that.

Eve, these are really beautiful photos. You have a great mastery on framing up the scene, everything is well balanced. Not everyone has that ability when taking nature pictures.

Thank you so so much :)

I worked on it's temperature and lights and shadows and sharpness

Oh that's interesting! I still like mine better, I prefer having more contrast to my images ;)

A very pretty place. You did a good job in representing it. Random stuff is good stuff.

Very nice travel report! Love the images, uprooted and following you now! Check out my photography, too @eveuncovered
Carpe Diem!

Beautiful. Reminds me of a holiday in Finland my family took. My parents wanted to avoid the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Di, so we went on holiday to Finland. We stayed in Helsinki for a few days, then went over to Estonia, Tallinn, on the Ferry. Still communist Russia then, a strange experience for me, aged 8! But then we spent a week in a log cabin on one of the lakes. I remember the name "Rantasalmi" from road sign. I fell into the lake, managed to get out without drowning even though I couldn't swim... As you can tell, I have fond memories of that holiday. Perhaps I should make a steem post about it...

Nice stunning photos! Check out my recent adventure trip to Cebu as I had a lot of amazing photos as well.

I could spend my holidays there! I always wanted to try diving but unfortunately i'm scared of water :( thank you for sharing these wonderful photos with us

It is a bit scary, even when I just tried diving in the swimming pool. I'll just stick to being on the surface of the water :)
