Taking a First Step

My name is Chris. I'm 36 years old, father of 3. I live a simple life in the prairies of Canada, and like most places it has its ups and downs. My childhood was different from most people in my part of the world.

Without getting too personal I had to grow up very fast and didn't really get a chance to relax and have fun until I was a teenager. By then the "relax and have fun" was basically drinking, smoking weed and hanging out with friends. I wasted a lot of time is my point. I became a father in my early twenties and decided I had to put my children first so that they could grow up in an environment better than I did and I stopped my partying and got an honest job. 14 years later and I have done a good job despite having to divorce their mother 7 years ago. I have since remarried and am much happier.

Now my children are getting older and my fatherly duties seem to be getting smaller. I guess part of being a parent to 3 daughters is that the father gets phased out eventually until they are adults. Such is life. But I am left thinking about what to do with myself in life once my children are truly grown up and even now.

Blogging is something I have thought of for a long time but I have always considered my life too boring. My dream has always been to travel and film the places I go to. Obviously this is something that has been done to death on YouTube but I don't care. Those people inspire me. I grew up dreaming of doing what people like Anthony Bourdain did; seeing the world, meeting people, sharing a meal and showing people my travels. It doesn't matter if others have done it, I haven't.

It doesn't matter if no one sees the videos I will eventually post or if no one reads this blog either. I didn't stay in the back of the room my whole life to suddenly try to be famous. Seeing the world is my goal and if people want to see or read about it that is great but not necessary. I want to be able to show my wife, kids and hopefully grandkids one day that there is more to me than they thought, that I'm not just a meat cutter that watches YouTube. I want to show myself that too.

Of course at the beginning of the year my wife came home with passport applications and I thought "this is the year, 2020 will be the year I finally leave Canada...."

Guess not.

So I think at first I will explore my area of southern Alberta in Canada. I don't have a decent video camera yet but there are beautiful parts of Canada very nearby me that people from other countries might be interested in seeing. Who knows? Every journey begins with a single step.

So there is my first step out of being just a meat cutter and into a part time travel blogger. I hope whoever reads this is doing well. For now a simple picture I took at Waterton Lakes national park in Alberta, Canada in the early morning before anyone else was out. Enjoy!
