My spouse Dashie and I are currently in our second year of full-time travel in our 22 ft Winnebago Rialta. We're currently snowbirding in Florida, and will head up the East Coast after the Winter subsides.
One secret to traveling on the cheap is not paying for camping! And a great way to do that is to check out places like Babcock-Webb WMA (Wildlife Management Area).
Florida has WMA's and Water Management Districts, which offer opportunities for free camping for different durations of time, depending on the season.
What they lack in amenities they make up for in natural beauty and friendly people from all different walks of life, from old hippies, to retirees, to young technomads.
Different regions of the U.S. will have different types of free recreational locations, from BLM (Bureau of Land Management) lands to Army Corps of Engineers Lands, and so on. Campendium.com is a great site to see what free camping options exist in your area.
If you're a technomad, don't forget your Wifi hotspot! 4 bars of VZW at the Babcock-Webb WMA!

Yes, definitely check out all WMA's if you are in Florida. They all have different rules for when you can camp, but if you're willing to travel, there are always options: http://myfwc.com/viewing/recreation/camping/

The walls have been closing in on us a little bit, but we've avoided most of the storms by us, but it's been freezing! We tried to brave it without the heater for the first few nights where temps fell into the 30's, but I had enough of it two nights ago and kicked our electric heater on, which was a great decision :) Finally warming up now, just overcast, bad for our battery charging prospects, which means running the generator more, but I think we're due for a storm tomorrow. All is gut though, as we're heading out of the WMA and down to Naples for a week with family (i.e. living the luxurious life)

Can you build campfires on WMA land? You could always did an alcove with a 4x8 plywood ramp over top and build a huge campfire at the for of the alcove in a storm. Given you have a sense of the wind direction and won't get flooded. -in the craziest instances. I know a lady who delivered a baby in a hurricane, nomad style, in a dug out alcove, never forgot that story. Happy to hear you two will be in safe and warm places soon☀️

Hahaha, that sounds intense. Yeah, building campfires is all good, so long as you have a fire ring of some sorts.
