Yuraygir National Park 'Key Man'

in travel •  7 years ago

I was brought to the 'key man' statute in the middle of a forest while out for the day with friends. It was build by a Lithuanian tightrope walker-Jonas Slovenski. He build it in 1956 in memory to his maker. He earned himself a reputation as a fearless axeman making sleepers in the forest, mostly because he worked in the nude- waering nothing but a pair of gumboots. He was born Jonaas Zilinskas but he changed his name to Jonaas Slovenski when he migrated to Australia from Lithuania after WWII.

Jonaas has become an urban legend in the nearby town of Corindi, where he spent much of his life.
