The unique story of Kirindi Ella is interwoven in mystery, mythical stories and beauty. Occupying the space of being Sri Lanka's seventh highest water fall, It can be seen when you go from colombo to Pelmadulla and get on to the Katupitiya road which goes by a tea factory. You have to go along a foot path just beyond the tea factory and if you do not mind the wild grass and reeds, you could go quite close to the waterfall.. It's commonly known that Kirindi Ella falls from a height of 116 meters and creates a picture that some describe as 'breathtaking'.
If you trace the falls back to its source you will find yourself at the Kuttapitiya Mountain. The stream that leads up to the falls is 13 km long and flows through the Kaluwaramukalana Jungle, via the Denawaka River to the Kaluganga River with a sense of determination. One could even say that the water flows with a sense of purpose, almost as if it's trying to achieve its suicidal goal of falling off the cliff!
The water that jumps into the air dives down making a deep pool called the Diyagathwala. According to local folklore there is a flight of stone steps which leads to the bottom of the pool where you will be able to find a hidden treasure trove. Drying the magic out of this story is the annual drought which reveals that the story of the hidden treasure trove is just a story and nothing else.
Kirindi Ella is not only beautiful in itself but it's also surrounded by a heavily wooded area which embraces a variety of plant species and wildlife. As you can see Kirindi Ella is not a typical water fall, but a water fall that is packed with surprises and who knows maybe even a treasure trove!
This is one of the most beautiful waterfalls found in Sri Lanka. I have seen it. It is so attractive. You reminded me a forgotten memory and motivated me to watch it again.
