What is Typosquatting?

Typosquatting, or URL hijacking, is when people claim (register) domains, that have a similar spelling as the target domain you are trying to get to. Once you hit the site the bad actor will phish you to get you to enter PII (Personally Identifiable Information) or infect you will malware.

Why is this in the Travel Section?

We all know how people try to typosquat on Steemit. Now hackers are targeting Government (Federal, State, and Local) sites. This has been going on for years but the problem continues to grow. Some of the key targets are sites where you have to register for something like a fishing license, camping permit, and so on. Some of these sites are now appearing in the search results. A major security organization has notified the various government agencies about this problem this week.

Is Hawaii affected?

As far as we know there are no reported cases for Hawaii governments sites.

We recommend you stay vigilant. For those of us that trade stocks, and crypto online, we are also targets for typosquatting.
