Throwback: Exploring Prambanan Temple (Indonesia)

The short trip to Miyoshi last weekend has left me with a travel hangover and as always, I turn to my trusty image gallery to browse through my old photos and reminisce.

When I was still living in Singapore, travelling to Indonesia was very easy and affordable. A two-way flight to the city of Yogjakarta only cost me about $150 and takes just over an hour to get there.

I had two reasons for coming here - one of which was to explore the Prambanan Temple.

Prambanan is considered to be the largest and most beautiful Hindu temple in the country. Built around the 9th century, it was later rediscovered by the Dutchman CA Lons in 1733. Because of its astonishing beauty and history, Prambanan was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1991

Originally, the Prambanan compound was composed of 240 temples but only a few remain upright including the three main temples dedicated to Shiva (the biggest and pictured on top) and two smaller ones on each side dedicated to Brahma and Vishnu respectively.

Surrounding the main temple yard are the rest of the temples, most of which are left in ruins but still holds an air of mystery despite their current state.

My other reason for visiting this city was to experience the vertical cave of Goa Jomblang - another wonder of nature (I will feature that in another throwback post). So if you're planning to travel to Indonesia, you might want to consider adding Yogyakarta to your itinerary.
