Today I'm takting you to the gorgeous and medieval town Arezzo. Arezzo is located about 50 miles southeast of Florence. It is set on a steep hill with the upper part of the town maintaining its medieval appearance with a cathedral, town hall and Medici Fortress.

The perfect time to visit Arezzo is during the evening when the sun goes down and the houses turn into a warm orange. There are lots of places to visit and things to do in Arezzo itself.

The Church of Santa Maria della Pieve is the oldest and, after San Francesco, the second most significant church in Arezzo. It is located in the center of Piazza Grande. The birth of Pieve was linked to the rise of Arezzo as a free commune. The citizens built the church in the center of the city in competition with the cathedral, where the bishop resided as a feudal lord on the hill of Pionta outside the city wall. The establishment of a pieve in a city state is very rare in the north and central Italy.

In the center of the city of Arezzo lies the medieval Piazza Grande. The square is characterized by a trapezoidal floor plan and an oblique surface.
Every year the famous rider's games take place on the Piazza Grande. The "Giostra del Saracino" in Arezzo takes place annually on the third Saturday of July and the first Sunday in August. The "Saracen tournament" has a long history. It is known from the ancient Chronicles of Arezzo that a battle took place on 6th August 1535, dedicated to the protector of Arezzo martyr Donato. The winner at that time received eight spears of violet atlas.

The street corso is one way that takes you to the Piazza Grande and the cathedral. Corso offers great shopping options for regional products and clothing.

At the top of the town, the highest point of Arezzo hills, stands the cathedral. Its smooth appearance is the result of a process that started construction in 1278 and ended in the first period of the sixteenth century. In detail, however, the bell tower dates from 1859 and the facade to 1914.
