Living On The Oceans For 8 Months! The Real Story. PART 2

in travel •  7 years ago

Today I will be elaborating on what I think were the biggest pros and cons of living on the oceans. Hopefully you will be able to find out if this is something for you! In my last blog I gave you an insight on how I ended up on a Cruise ship and I talked briefly about my first few months living on the oceans. Today’s blog will be about living on one of the biggest ships of the world!

Unexpected transfer
If you haven’t yet and you feel a need to then you can find the post leading up to this one here: https://steemit.com/travel/@heyitshaas/living-on-the-oceans-or-8-months-the-real-story-part-1

All in all, everything was very enjoyable for me on the ship I initially boarded on: Legend of the Seas. After the first 3 months, the ship was due to go to Asia, after having seen most of the Pacific Ocean. I was very excited about all the new places we would soon see when I received an email from my employer stating that they wanted me to change ships! They found it more suitable for me to learn and work on a bigger ship. So before we set sail to Asia, they decided to send me to Anthem of the Seas, one of the biggest ships in the world!!

I was overwhelmed by feelings of surprise and disappointment. I really felt at home on the Legend of the Seas and there had been many nice ports in Asia to look forward to! When my flight details for the transfer first came in, I only looked at the date to know when I would be leaving. When the transfer date came closer and I decided to take a closer look at my flight details I was shocked!
My flight would take me from from Brisbane, Australia via Abu Dhabi to New York and finally to Puerto Rico where I would join the ship after flying for 40(!) hours. Trust me: it was THE WORST and longest trip I was ever on, it was simply too much.

Anthem of the Seas
Because of the transfer, I went from working one of the smaller ships of the fleet to working on a ship that is home to 6000 people! Everything on this monster was almost twice a big, intense, impressive, frustrating end exhausting.

Where the Legend of the Seas was built 20 years ago, the Anthem of the seas was just one year old and the ship had all the latest equipment and entertainment on board. I really enjoyed the design of my new home, it was just super nice! Below you can check out some of the “amenities”...

During my “stay”, the Anthem of the Seas was sailing in the Caribbean while based out of New York. We visited Haiti, Saint Martin, Boston , Puerto Rico, The Bahamas, Saint Kitts and Nevis ,Barbados and every fortnight we had day of in Bermuda.

Final verdict.

Because the ship is considered one of the flagships of Royal Caribbean the pressure of working there was much larger. If you look at the pictures of the beautiful ship and look at the destinations we visited, it looks like you are living the dream. And depending on what your dream is, you might be, but before you sign up, let me list some of the obvious pros and cons that I experienced.

Pro:
+Travel
+Saving money
+Meeting people from all over the globe
+Every day is an adventure (no 9-5 grind)
+Stunning destinations
+Once in a lifetime(?) experience
+Great travel option for people whom it’s hard for to get visas for other countries

Cons:
-Work,work,work
-Stress
-Mentally tough
-NO privacy ever
-You almost never have steady Wifi
-Saying goodbye to friends on an almost weekly basis
-Days and days of not even leaving the ship
-Same food most of the time

See for yourself if you are up for the task! If you are seriously considering this option then please let me know how I can help and if you have any question don’t hesitate to ask!
I decided to leave the ship life after my first contract, trying to find another way to travel the world. Living on the oceans is a unique experience for sure though and I don’t regret a thing!

Loved reading this and learning about your experience! I would love to work on a cruise ship as entertainment, dj or something like that and have experience in events as well!

How do I go about getting work? Your input would be appreciated. :)

this blog will help: https://steemit.com/travel/@heyitshaas/how-to-make-up-to-usd50-000-in-eight-months-while-travelling

so pick your cruiseline first and then just contact them.. if you need more i would love to help

thats quite a ship your showing that you traveled on, looks way cooler than your average run of the mill cruise ship. I like the pictures of the gaming and theatre. Shows a lot of things to do besides just lating in the sun and whatnot. The bubble that descends into the water is really futuristic.

its indeed quite a ship and such a big industry! new ships coming out every year. the employer i worked for Royal Carribean is showing some industry firsts.. was living on a 6000 people small village
once in a lifetime for sure

That's one amazing experience!

I wanna know your thoughts about my new post My Canyoneeing Adventure Thanks :)

Espectacular!

Wow
It's so nice

Thanks! something you would like?

I work they really work that staff like CRAZY. Met many a person during my world travels with relatives who staffed cruise ships and they say again and again; this is a tough job! From the hours to the pressure, cruises are heavily service-oriented deals so the workers gotta be on their toes.

I admire you for working on a ship, for seeing the world and for living on the oceans. Good for you, experiencing life and what it has to offer.

Thanks! its is very demanding, you are always on the clock, at the end of your contract you are drained and super tired, but i was able to see so many places i would never been abel to see... so pick your side

great that you had some good experiences in the sea and got to travel to some exotic locations. I wish you good luck for a new opportunity wherein you get to travel and have fun. Hopefully the next post will be without any cons and more pros

Haha, thanks for your response, in Amsterdam right now thiinking about what will be next for me. Will travel soon again! loved living on the oceans, dont regret a thing, hard work tho..

Itsss awesomeeeeee

and hard work at the same time...

I worked on oil and gas related boats in the Gulf of Mexico for the last year.
Pro: Money
Con: Everything else.

haha, but you can use the money to travel and enjoy yourself, otherwise there is always the 9-5 grind waiting. still working on the boats?

Just recently stopped because the company I worked for is evil. I can't go back to 9-5 so I'll sail out somewhere after my money runs out. Right now I'm kicking back, having a drink, and writing.

Sounds good! if you need some help landing a Cruise ship job , I am moe then willing to help
Enjoy your downtime

Nice and honest view. Would YOU do it again?

It has a big upside, i love working with people from all over the world, love to travel and discover! right now i am home in Amsterdam thinking about will be next for me, deciding where to go next, but if I end up in the 9-5 grind I would do it again! mostly because you can safe almost you earn therefore if gives you more option then "breaking even" in real life

This is great!

Is it another Titanic? thus living on ocean for such long period could be a unique experience and you cut yourself from the entire world but what i see everything is amazing and looks good, this ship showing another world the same time.

its a different world, a sailing 6000 people village! interesting dynamic with so many people with different proffesions en background live together. at the end you forget what day it is, so only remember the day of the cruise, waking up on different island all the time

really super:> i followed and upvoted:p

Thanks!

wow! this story is so inspiring... seems like it can be my dream now. Thank you so much

You are welcome, hope you liked it! if you need info let me know..

The rich have it good. I guess I can dream. Back to my slums raft cruise.

working on cruise ships is for everybody! I was working with 20 different nationalities from all over the globe in my department

Yes everybody can work on a cruise who is qualified with the right skills. But who can take the cruise? Only the rich or middle class who have the funds to afford the cruise.

Thats true, but I am only talking about working, to me Cruises are indeed an expensive way to travel

That's an impressive theater onboard!

very big and they even show Broadway shows with full cast on the biggest ships
