Machu Pichu discovered on July 24, 1911

Famous tourist destination nowadays discovered

On that day Hiram Bingham discovered the ancient Inca settlement Machu Picchu - probably THE destination for tourism in the country of Peru.

But - was it really him or is it a fake info? Peruvian archaeologists claim Bingham was not the first outsider to see the settlement. Maybe it is the original discovery of a German? Would be a shame indeed. The mining engineer Carl Haenel from Germany claimed having accompanied the explorer J.M. von Hassel there already in 1910 - but there is no written proof.

Anyone can bring light into this here? What is the truth?
