Once, long ago, when I was very young here, I wrote a post about wanderlust, which I was very proud of. Why? Well, because it was my second Curie upvote, which was a huge deal, and the biggest reward I've ever gotten on a post and quite simply, because it was a good post. I had fun writing it.
Why?
Because I love travel. And yet, I have no trips in mind this year and that feels a bit sad. One of the reasons is well, obviously, that we're not mooning. And I'm not sure about spending all that cash. The other reason is, I don't really have anywhere to go. I don't have any meetings to go to. There's no one waiting for me out there, nothing calling me to one particular place. Nothing tangible at least.
And it feels a tad silly, you know? To say
"I'm going there"
"Why?"
"I don't know."
Because people expect you to have a reason. I suppose because travel is usually expensive and because most "normal" people have this rigorous schedule that can't really be broken. They need reasons for doing things and they kinda make you think you do too.
But then, I figured something. You don't need a reason. That's what wanderlust means - "a strong desire to explore the world". That's it. That's all the reason you need to go - that you want to. If you're going because you have a business meeting or you're going to attend something or whatever, then it has a sort of purpose, it's not just wandering around, is it?
And it feels more real, more serious. Like you can say "I'm going there to do X" and sound important and not...drifting.
But maybe it's okay to drift for a while.
I wonder, why are we so obsessed with seeming important? With seeming busy? Everyone's so desperate to sound like they're drowning in work and like they're so important, everyone wants a bit of them and they kinda have to do all these things at once. And they're always so annoyed.
Damn, I have to go to X meeting/event also
Like they'd much rather be doing something else, but you know they secretly enjoy it. You know what I mean? And I realize this purposeful traveling thing falls into the same mentality. You should travel because someone else told you to travel, because someone else gave it purpose for you.
But what if the purpose is waiting for you there, when you arrive?
I travel a lot for rock concerts. There aren't many bands who come to Ro, so I just go to them instead. But even that's not a real reason, is it? I'd say "I'm going to London" or wherever but when someone asks why and you say oh, to see X band, they're like "oh well, that doesn't sound very serious. that's a bit of a waste of cash, isn't it?"
It's an experience.
I don't know if it's silly or not.
Maybe the best answer to "why are you going" is "I don't know yet".
I don't know if this post makes any sense to you. It does to me, though, and I guess that's something.
Cheers for reading,
Maybe they need to aways sound busy so they can justify travelling as "having a holiday." Plus, the busier you are, the more in demand you are and thereby the more important you are.
The indigenous Australians know the way to go with their walkabout.

Possibly. I think it's a sign of an empty life, to be honest. If someone is fighting so hard to appear sought-after and busy chances are he is unsure of his own life choices. That's why he needs to prove they're good to outsiders. Besides, by gaining my (aka, the outsider's) appreciation or awe at his busy like, he confirms to himself he's doing it right.
How do you mean?

The aboriginal Australians have what they call walkabout. It's basically a way that they find themselves and I think young adults were initiated with it. They basically just up and off into the Bush on their own and come back when they come back, which could be days, weeks or months later. They take as long as they need and no questions are asked. It's just going walkabout. Such a wonderful concept in my opinion!
Have you ever seen the film Crocodile Dundee? It's mentioned in that.

That is just sooo cool. I wish we had that here, as I think it would be really beneficial, especially for young people.

Hi honeydue 👋
My longest traveling stint was for 3 months in Thailand 9 years ago. I went wandering that crazy, beautiful, mystical land on my own but ended up meeting people along my way, despite being shy.
The reason I told people I was going was to learn how to scuba dive... but really that was only a few weeks of my trip taken up with the PADI course and a Liveaboard diving trip afterwards.
Mainly, it was just to wander, learn and gain a bit of confidence back after a long bout of depression. The kill or cure method and it really worked. It's super cliche, but I returned changed and for the better.
Ha ha, yeah I've noticed that. All my adult life most of the men in my family have had that attitude and have been critical of how I go about my life. I think some people just believe it is the only way to move through life constructively. Lol, also self importance is food for egotist. I feel like artists and writers prove them wrong in their attitudes anyway, as I've never met a good writer who doesn't have a different routine from those self important types.
Very good point, and this is the difference between travel and adventure I think. Going out into the world simply to see what you can find is adventure... And you're sure to get more interesting stories doing it that way 🙂
Enjoyed reading your thoughts, keep us updated on where you decide to go exploring.

SOunds like it was an amazing experience and you had loads of fun. Honestly, I've always been of a mind that travel is the best medicine. For anything. A broken heart, depression, losing a job, anything.
Adventure is always a good solution.
I love your response and wow, three months...that's such a long time. It's interesting to see how differently we view this time at home and abroad. Because if you spend three months at home, it's nothing really, it's a bit of time. But if you tell someone you're going away for three months, they'll think it's ages. Weird.
Thank you for sharing your experience with me :) It sounds incredible!
Here's to many more such adventures! :)

It feels longer because there are more unique experiences which creates a more diverse timeline and a story, but when everything is just routine, there's less things to "grab on", hence it feels much shorter in hindsight. Well that's my (another) theory anyway.

I agree. Those three months flew by, even though I stayed in various places for a week at a time rather than a couple of days like some travelers do. I much prefer the slower pace of traveling. I can't remember who it was, might have been martibis, at steemfest said he thought 3 months was a long time to stay just in Thailand. He was like, "you could have done Vietnam and Cambodia as well in that time." Ha ha, I'm too lazy for such quick dashing about 😆

I agree @celestal time passes by a lot differently. Though I don't know, I've never really been away a whole lot. I've never been away three months like you @raj808 or however long you wandered about, @celestal :P And I'm really curious what that would be like... Especially to just stay in one place, get a feel of it, like a sort of new home, you know?
Sorry, daydreaming a bit into your conversation, guys :D

It was something like 54 days that I was away. Though I never stayed put for long: longest time was in Krakow for about 10 days and then in Oradea for about the same time.
I'm always up for listening to a good daydream ;)

54 days is nothing to sneeze at :O I've been contemplating a long term trip, and I must say this conversation and my present budget are butting heads right now :))))
Yeah, I remembered thinking you'd show up around here much sooner :D Oh well, sometimes it's good to stay, sometimes it's good to go, I suppose.
Haha especially when it's to do with travel, right? ;)

If your open to the idea, you could try to find a hostel or some place to volunteer at. Hostel was the first thing that comes to my mind, because there you'll have a high chance to meet like-minded people, so it wouldn't be an awful job, I think.
Haha, yes :D

Funnily enough, just after I read your post I stumbled upon one from lizanomadsoul all about phi phi Island in Thailand where I learned to dive. I spoke with her a little at steemfest, maybe you met her? Anyway, check out her profile for that post if you want some inspiration. Warning, it will make u wanna go Thailand though 🤣

Ha she already has :D pity Thailand is rather far away and expensive af to get to from over here, at least!
Yeah, I met her and spoke briefly to her too :D She's awesome! And funnily enough, I refreshed my feed and found her post, too. It was perfectly appropriate for my traveling mood, huh? :))

Ha ha, yeah syncronysity at its best. I was life is this the Twilight zone when that was the next post I looked at after yours and having just connected about phi phi Island.
Thailand is a bit far and expensive due sure. Maybe look at South/central America. It's just as far but not as expensive. I got a last minute flight to Cancun in Mexico a few years back for £285 return. Crazy cheap. Thompson holidays sell these last minute seats from people who've cancelled due to sickness. Worth looking at 🙂

I've always been a home-body, and really, my favorite part of travelling (not that I've done much of it - I only recently got my passport) has been coming home. But I think that's a perfectly valid reason to go on an adventure as well.
With all the friends you have on Steemit, I'm sure there's no shortage of places you could go and people you could visit. I hope you know you and your family are welcome here if you ever get an itching to visit the States and spend some time by the ocean!

But there are so many places you can travel to within the US that don't require a passport, right? I mean, it seems a shame to miss them ;) I like coming home, too, but you don't come back the same and I agree, I love this idea of it being the reason to go in the first place.
Haha yeah, I'm sure I can meet some awesome Steemians when I decide to go wandering. Owww thank you @winstonalden, that is such a sweet offer <3 Who wouldn't want to spend time by the ocean, right?

I love the wanderlust. I don't like visiting or hiting check points like everyone else, I really want to feel the city or the place. I love to get lost and most of the time I might miss the main attraction favouring a little small shiny corner that make sense in my world. Lately I have done a lot of tiring traveling as you say for my job and I felt like I haven't even been then.

My mum was always a planner. She'd get so annoyed if things didn't go to plan. My husband taught me how to go with the flow and it's so much more fun!

Aah I knew you'd resonate with this post! :) Yeah, I hate "main attractions" traveling also. It's nice, but it's also really dull, because you don't get an actual feel of the city. Because there are very few natives at those main attractions, it's usually just a lot of tourists like you, snapping a few quick pics and then moving on to the next objective. No way to travel at all.
I love getting lost in foreign cities. Last year, I went to Rome with my best friend and it was a very main attraction-y sort of journey. But funny enough, the best part was we got lost looking for the last one and met this English woman who was also lost looking for the place and got chatting and instead went and got coffee with her. It was very random, I love that sort of thing. :)
I so get that. I mean, if you want the main toursity places, you can just see them online. It's not representative of the place at all. Maybe you get to go again and experience those cities better ;)

I don't travel a great deal any more. When I do go somewhere, it's usually to visit one of my relatives. But I like your idea of going somewhere without a particular purpose in mind. Although if I make a trip in the winter again, there will be the underlying purpose of escaping winter!

That is always such a good reason!! :) I hate winter, but all the places close to me (aka also in Europe) are cold as hell during winters as well, so it doesn't make for much fun traveling ;)
