Western Canada - Day 10 : 📷 Sulphur mountain and Sanson's peak hiking loop

in travel •  7 years ago

Hello! I'm back to this trip's posts.

It was a beautiful day to go hiking and take wildlife pictures. Sulphur mountain got its name because of the hot springs that can be found in their slopes. The mountain also has a gondola that goes up to the summit where you have a nice view of Banff and access to Sanson's peak. The peak was the place for an old weather observatory, with the time it was abandoned and the government built a Cosmic Ray Station which is now also dismantled.

The hiking path described in the official guide is in the same face as the gondola so I didn't completely feel in the "nature", fortunately there is another way down that is not in the maps.

The experience was not that bad as you can see the city, the Bow river and the small Tunnel mountain.

Sanson's peak: named after Norman Bethune Sanson who attended the observatory on top of the mountain. Walking there is just 10 mins in a wood platform. It was full of tourists like me :-)

Mount Edith and Cory pass: I don't want to forget these mountain because initially I wanted to do that hike but things turned out differently. Next time!

The "secret" path to go down is very easy to find, just besides Sanson's peak. It was used by Mr. Sanson to go to the observatory.

There were only two persons in this path so it was easier to see some wildlife: The male deer that was very aware of our presence and the relaxed marmot who didn't care about us!

The path ends on the pristine Bow river. You still need to walk 4 Km to go downtown. In total the loop was like 15 Km.

And as always there were surprises...while having a deserved rest in downtown a bit of rain brought along an awesome rainbow (the one I saw is one thousand times more beautiful than the picture)

...and 1 hour later the full Moon rising at Mount Rundle. What else should I ask for?

It is not finished yet, tomorrow the visit to Lake Minnewanka before my flight back.

Thanks!
