Day 6, Pack Ice round Sorkapp, the search for Polar Bear!
Snowy, stormy, notheasterly gail and a temperature app. 4 degrees celsius.
The ship cruised all the day around Sorkapp (South Cape) and up through the long and broad fjord of Storfjorden, the fjord between Spitsbergen and Edgeoya. We encountered a lot of ice that made navigation slow, the ice had drifted from the north due to strong winds. The edge of the ice pack was full of wildlife. We had Brunnichs Guillemot and Kittiwakes all the time but most impressive where the large groups of Harp |Seals in front of the Maryshev.
All day long we were searching the pack ice for the great fluffy one, easier said then done.
Using our binoculars we searched and searched but no luck. Still it never got dull. Cruising the pack ice is amazing.
But in the evening the captain was informed by another expedition ship that there was a Polar Bear nearby, our first encounter with the King Of the Arctic!
The Polar Bear just hanging around, we kept our distance. This was our first encounter!
During the evening and into the night we had a little storm. Not everybody was happy with the rocking of the boat, some got sick. I found it entertaining, it was awesome.
Next is day 7!

Hello @bohdissatva, global warming is an item talked about during the trip. There is a lot of information about it from the believers and the disbelievers. One thing I noticed is that the captain and the guides where extremely surprised by the pack ice that was there. The captain is using ice charts for cruising and navigating. The ice charts are provided by an official instution. On the ice charts there was no visible pack ice and their plan was to go around the whole of Svalbard. Once we got a little more up north there was no way through because of the huge amount of pack ice that was there. There was also a glaciers that completely disappeard (during the last 150 years) but on the other hand other glaciers are growing. I could not see it with my own eyes but I am sure that we as a species are not taking good care of this planet.
Thanks for the comment.
