Venice, the capital of the Veneto region in northern Italy, occupies more than 100 small islands in a lake of the Adriatic Sea. The city does not include any roads, only the canals, including the Grand Canal, are bordered by Gothic and Renaissance palaces. In the city center, St. Mark's Square is home to Saint Mark's Cathedral, covered with Byzantine mosaics, and St. Mark's Tower, which overlooks the Venetian Red Roof.
