Hello everybody and welcome to my travel destination blog, about Niagara Falls. Living in New England means that a trip to Niagara Falls is just a days drive away. I remember driving up through New York state and feeling the excitement of crossing the border into Canada. It's a beautiful drive up through the country and Canada itself if full of wonderful scenic locations. It was the cheapest vacation I've ever been on, and no passport needed, at the time anyway, it might have changed. But before I knew it we were at the breathtaking Niagara Falls.

Although it's just called Niagara Falls it's actually made up of two different waterfalls. It's comprised of the American Falls, and the Horseshoe Falls. They're so massive it really is a sight to behold, I've never seen anything quite like it. The American Falls are the more straight across ones, on the left of the picture above. The Horseshoe Falls are much bigger and are literally shaped like a horseshoe. I'll put a clearer picture of them below.

Now, if you want a more close up view of the massive waterfalls you can buy a ticket for a ride on the Maid of the Mist. The "Maid" is a huge ship you go on and they drive you right up as close as you can get to the falls. I remember getting on the boat, being handed a big poncho that covers your entire body and standing at the rail of the mighty ship approaching the towering falls. The sound of all that water crashing down below is an amazing thing, as you get completely soaked by the huge amount of mist filling the air all around you. My advice, wear the poncho! You can see the Maid of the Mist in some of these photos, just to get an idea of the scale of these huge waterfalls.

Niagara Falls was established in 1885 making it the oldest state park in the United States. 3,160 tons of water flow over the falls every second, or about 750,000 gallons. Four of the five Great Lakes flow into Niagara Falls leading to a seemingly never ending supply of water, water that is used to create 4 million kilowatts of electricity that gets shared by Canada and the United States. Niagara Falls and the surrounding area are home to some rare and beautiful plants and animals.

During the harsh winters Niagara does partially freeze, which is beautiful in it's own way. I've never been there during this time though. At night the falls get lit up by colored spot lights, creating an amazing spectacle. I'm not sure if they do this every night, but during my time there they did. I'll never forget how incredible the falls look with all those colored lights shining on them, really something special.

If you ever get the chance to see Niagara Falls I would highly recommend making the trip to upstate New York/ Canada. It's so incredible to see the massive amount of water and the natural beauty of the oldest state park in the United States. Making the trek up there is something I will never forget and I'm grateful to be so lucky as to live fairly close to this natural wonder. A truly amazing sight.

Absolutely beautiful pictures. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to go there when I was in the US last year. Maybe next year :-)
