A day in Guatape: Colombia

in travel •  7 years ago

Hello all! This is my first post on the Steemit platform. After learning about it and humming and hawing for some time I decided to join the community. There isn't really a theme to this blog but I hope to share my interests with you all. These include Travel, hiking, nature, gardening and world issues. Well thats all done with, now for some content!

Just an hour and a bit from Medellin, Colombia you can find the idyllic town of Guatape. Easily accessible by public transportation or the many tour companies that offer single day or multi-day tours. I decided to go with "Top 10 tours" Recommended by the hostel. The tour offered lunch, tour of one of Pablo Escobars many homes, town of Guatape and climbing the "Rock" aka El Penol.

Run down mansion which is actually owned by one of Escobar's butler/bodyguards. Ironically enough portions of it are now used for paintball games including "Capture Pablo"

The town of Guatape. With its bright colors and storied buildings it's a nice place to wander for a bit. Recommend sitting in the center with an helado and simply people watching.

This is the all popular rock, in all its granitey glory. Climbing up this bad boy took 15 mins or so. Being short legged but in decent shape I found it pretty difficult. There are 744 steps I believe but the view was oh so worth it!

Jumped in the van for a nice countryside drive back to the bustling Medellin. Overall great day, perfect weather and good company. Thanks for reading!

No selfie? :D
Could you make some more posts about whats happening to Pablo's propertys nowdays? I find that person to be very impresive / interesting. Most of the people talk about politicians and scientists that have achieved a lot, but nobody talks about "gangsters". It's mind blowing how much did he achieve in his lifetime. What a determination he had.

Haha I'm not one for ruining a great picture with my face :)
From what I recall Mr. Escobar actually had up to 400 different homes just like this, allowing him to evade authorities when needed. This property is looked after and owned by one of his old staff. I have not gone into deep research about his life and times but I understand there are many who believe he changed the country for the better and mourned his death. That is up to debate. Yes I do agree that the magnitude of his influence is underestimated.
