The Golden Circle Tour is one of the most popular guided tours you can take on the beautiful island of Iceland. The proximity of the tour (and its numerous sights) to Reykjavik means that the majority of tourists that visit Iceland will take part.
The Kerio Crater was (at least for my wife and I) the first stop on our tour. As we visited Iceland in December the sun only rose at around 11am (before setting at around 3pm) and we arrived at the crater just as the sun was coming up, making it a very eerie and atmospheric time of day to see this natural wonder.
This was a big highlight of the tour for me. Ok, it isn't as impressive as the geysers, or as majestic as Gulfoss but it had an other worldly, almost magical feeling to it.
Here are a few images from within the crater, at dawn.
And this is my favourite image… taken at the base of the crater.
