Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1979, the Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia's best known park, and is usually a must see for most tourists.
Its main attraction is 16 lakes that are united through cascades and waterfalls of spectacular beauty and that can be observed through walkways that cross the lakes. The park became a candidate to be one of the seven natural wonders of the world in 2011.
Its spectacular landscapes make it worth visiting even on cloudy days. You have to take into account that if the vegetation is so thick and abundant in the Plitvice Lakes National Park is because the precipitation is significant, with rains even during the driest month. So you should not be discouraged if it turns out that it rains just the day you visit it (as it happened to us, by the way) because the park is still a splendid plan.
The visit is done on foot through trails and wooden bridges that wind around the edges of the lakes and through the rumble of the falls. Larger lakes are crossed by quiet boats that cross the lower lake every 30 minutes or so.
Although it is most common to use the boats and buses included in the price of the park entrance, you can visit the Plitvice Lakes National Park only by foot, and it would take a little over six hours.
Although you certainly would like and despite the fact that there is always some smarty-pants guy that skips the prohibition, keep in mind that you're not allowed to bathe in any of the lakes.
Tip: The large expanse of the park makes it not completely fenced and you may feel tempted to sneak in. However, there are posters throughout the park and in several languages, which remind you that you have to buy the ticket. Without entering into moral discussions, I do not recommend you to sneak in, since contrary to what I have read in other blogs, they asked us for the admission tickets. Keep in mind that in case of not having the entrance while staying in the park you risk a fine that will be given to you by some unfriendly security men that (at least in our case) did not speak any English. Besides, the concern of not having the entrance could spoil your visit.
