From Portugal to the Roof of the World

Traveling to China is an incredible experience, and visiting Tibet was undoubtedly one of the most memorable parts of my journey. I want to share my story of traveling from Portugal to Tibet traveling from Portugal to Tibet, along with tips for anyone planning a similar adventure.

My Experience Traveling in China

China is a country that truly amazed me with its vast landscapes and rich culture. From the bustling streets of Beijing to the serene karst mountains of Guilin, I felt like every place had a story to tell. One of my favorite moments was walking through the ancient alleys of Lijiang, where the old-world charm blended seamlessly with the local way of life. The food was another highlight—whether it was savoring spicy Sichuan hotpot or enjoying delicate dim sum in the south, every meal felt like an adventure on its own. But what struck me most was the warmth of the people I met along the way. Their kindness and hospitality made my trip even more special.

How I Traveled to Tibet from Portugal

Traveling to Tibet takes some extra effort due to the permits and planning required, but it’s absolutely worth it. Here’s how I made the journey:

Step 1: Getting a Chinese Visa

The first step was obtaining a Chinese visa. I visited the Chinese Embassy in Lisbon with all the necessary documents, including my passport, a completed visa application form, and details of my travel plans. The process was straightforward, and after about a week, I had my visa in hand.

Step 2: Arranging for a Tibet Travel Permit

To visit Tibet, I had to join a guided tour since independent travel isn’t allowed. The travel agency I chose handled the permit application for me. This document is essential and is checked multiple times during your journey, whether you’re flying or taking the train to Tibet.

Step 3: Traveling to Tibet

There are a few ways to reach Tibet, but here’s what worked best for me:

Option A: Flying

I first flew from Lisbon to Beijing, which served as my gateway city. From there, I took a domestic flight to Lhasa. The flight into Lhasa was breathtaking, with views of snow-capped peaks emerging as we approached the Tibetan Plateau.

Option B: Taking the Train

On my return journey, I opted for the Qinghai-Tibet Railway from Lhasa to Xining. This train ride was an unforgettable experience. Passing through endless grasslands, high-altitude deserts, and mountains, it gave me a deeper appreciation of Tibet’s remote beauty.

Step 4: Acclimating to the Altitude

Arriving in Lhasa, I immediately felt the thin air. I took it slow for the first couple of days to let my body adjust. Drinking plenty of water and avoiding strenuous activities really helped me acclimate.

Highlights of My Trip to Tibet

Tibet turned out to be even more magical than I had imagined. Here are some of the highlights:

Potala Palace: Standing in front of this iconic structure was surreal. Exploring its halls filled with ancient relics and murals was like stepping back in time.

Jokhang Temple: Watching pilgrims prostrate themselves in devotion was deeply moving. The temple’s golden roof offered a stunning view of the city.

Namtso Lake: The vivid turquoise waters surrounded by snow-capped peaks made this one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.

Local Culture: I loved sitting in small tea houses, sipping butter tea, and chatting with locals. Their stories gave me a glimpse into Tibetan life and traditions.
