Siquijor.jpeg

Relatively a small island in the Visayas archipelago, the island province of Siquijor is nothing lesser when it comes to charm and beauty. It is a sought after destination for local and international tourists and is gradually marking a huge print in the tourist map. But not so long ago, it has a reputation that makes tourists avoid visiting the island. It is popular for having mystical traditions and practices like “Kulam” or dark magic. Up until now, stories of witchcraft and sorcery are still prevalent in its neighboring provinces. But for me who has been to this island multiple times already, the only magic I have seen and experienced is BEAUTY.

Siquijor is a paradise of its own accord. It has every good thing that you would need; nature’s wonders, delectable food and friendly locals. It has that usual province vibes, a perfect contrast to city living. Tall trees instead of towering concrete blocks. No traffic, just motorcycles on the road. And of course, fresh clean air.

If you travel to find peace and tranquility, then Siquijor is the perfect place.

Hammock.jpeg My kind of weekend.

Go to the West coast of the island and you will see long stretch of fine white sand beach. If you are lucky enough, you can have it all for yourself.

San Juan Beach.jpeg The beach on a golden hour.

There are plenty of places to visit and things to do in Siquijor. And since this is a small island, you can go and enjoy almost all of these in just one day. I have listed below famous attractions for you to consider if you are planning to tour around the province.

The San Isidro Labrador Parish Church

Lazi.jpeg Baroque Church in Siquijor

Commonly known as Lazi Church, this Roman Catholic church was built by Filipino artisans in 1884. It follows a neoclassical style of architecture and is made of sea stones and wood. It is declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines in 2012. At the other side of the road, stand one of the biggest convent in the country - The Lazi Convent.

Lazi Inside.jpeg Inside Lazi Church.

This church is a living witness to the Spanish settlement in Siquijor. Aside from Lazi Church, there are five more churches that you may want to visit. These are: St. Francis of Assisi Church, St. Augustine Parish Church, Santa Maria Church, Mt. Carmel Church and St. Vincent Ferrer Church.

Capilay Spring Park

Located right at the center of San Juan, Capilay Spring Park is among the well-known natural springs in the province. Locals go there to plunge and enjoy its cold water especially on a hot summer season. During weekends, families go there to have picnic or sometimes just stroll and enjoy the gentle breeze while the kids are swimming or playing in the playground. You need not to worry if you do not know how to swim as half of the swimming pool is shallow and ideal for non swimmers and kids.

Centuries Old Balete Tree and Fish Spa

Balete.jpeg The Enchanted 400 Years Old Tree.

Yes, I really meant “centuries”! This Balete Tree accordingly is more than 400 Years Old. This is the oldest and biggest Balete Tree that can be found in Siquijor. Local believes that this tree is enchanted. And you have to say “Tabi-tabi” when getting closer to the tree. What makes this Balete extra special is that it has a spring flowing all the way from its base. Nobody knows how deep the spring is and I guess, nobody dares to swim deep into its massive root system.

Fish Spa.jpeg Fish Spa

The local government of Lazi built a small pool around the Balete Tree where you can dip your feet while hundreds of “Doctor Fish” feast on your calluses and dead skin cells. For only 5 Pesos, It is definitely a good stop over and relax for the next 30 minutes or more.

Within the area you will find a souvenir shop. They sell really interesting stuff like voodoo dolls and this…

Salagdoong Beach

Salagdoong.jpeg Beautiful Salagdoong.

This beach located in the town of Maria is primarily the most favored beach among the locals in Siquijor. During weekends, cottages are full with families and group of friends celebrating a birthday or some just wanted a good fine day at the beach. Salagdoong beach is a typical public beach resort. It has open cottages and a common wash area for the guests. It also has a restaurant. If you do not have food, you can just order it from there.

Salagdoong boasts an 35 feet cliff diving experience. If you are up for some adrenaline rush then you should go for it. I did this a lot of times, It is addicting.

Cambugahay Falls

Considered to be Siquijor’s top tourist attraction, Cambugahay Falls is nestled in the lush green forest of Lazi. You need to take approximately 130 steep steps going down to the falls. Going there and getting back to the main road is quite a challenge but definitely worth all your effort. Entrance Fee is 50 Pesos and a tour guide will guide you to the falls.

Cambugahay 2.jpeg Isn't she lovely?

The cascade has three different levels. All are equally astonishing. For an additional fee of 50 Pesos, you can try the rope swings. Swing and jump right into the turquoise water of Cambugahay Falls. If you Trek a little bit deeper into the forest you will find a cave waiting to be explored.

Cambugahay.jpeg The water is calling me.

The Cambugahay Falls is always the highlight in my trips to Siquijor. Another waterfall in the island is Lugnason Falls. If you are not too tight with your schedule, this waterfall also deserves your company.

THINGS TO CONSIDER:

  • Transportation
    • If you are traveling alone and can drive a motorcycle then it is better to rent a motorcycle to get you around the island. 1 Day rental fee is usually 300 Pesos. Another option is to charter a tricycle or a multicab for a day tour. Usual rate is 1500/Day.
  • Accommodation
    • There are a lot of options in Siquijor, you can choose from budget hostels to more expensive resorts. The last time I stayed Siquijor, I booked my accommodation in The Bruce in San Juan Siquijor. I paid for 1,000/Night stay for a treehouse for two. It has nice beach and a perfect view of Sunset.
