Airplane Grave Yard Open for Tourists - Travel in Thailand

in travel •  8 years ago  (edited)

Have you ever wandered what it would be like to be on the set from LOST? The airplane graveyard in Bangkok gives you this opportunity.

It is a tourist attraction not found in the guide books, a place that many locals don't even know about, yet it is accessible from the city centre.

Total Freedom

This is not an officially run tourist attraction. There are no rules to abide by here. Equally, with no rules comes no compliance requirements. You can explore what you want, how you want here. Please take a spoonful of common sense. It is easy to injure yourself here or to damage property needlessly. Take care and have fun.

The planes

There are fuselages, wings and bit and pieces from many different aircraft including a Boeing 747 and a McDonnell Douglas MD-82

The planes have largely been stripped of their valuable components. You can jump into and walk around the different areas of the planes. You will need some level of agility to do this successfully. For the 747, I climbed in through the freight hold the jumped up through a whole in the floor to the first level. The stairs to the second level are still intact but a little soft in places.

The view from the 747 is impressive looking at the debris below

How to get there

You can take the river boats from the centre of town. This is the simplest, quickest and cheapest if you are staying in the centre of Bangkok. It costs around 20 baht each and takes you very very close without any traffic.

There is no officials operating this place. It may look closed when you get to the gate. It isn't. Simply rattle the gate or jump over. There are Thai families living in the fuselage of one of aircraft. They will come out and discuss a price with you. We paid 200 Baht each, which is what I have heard other people pay the same. Expect to pay this. You can also negotiate if you feel you wish to.

It is a bit of a mess - but great fun to poke and look through

Not sure I would use this escape door

Safety equipment littered around gives this the feeling of being in a plane crash

It must be an unusual view for people living in the apartment blocks

Even more creepy are the abandoned teddy bears

It is oddly calming, probably because there are no other tourists here

That's cool and creepy at the same time. #thealliance

Thank you! I'd recommend that you visit any chance you get.

nice pics 👍

That is kind of eerie! But I would totally make a full day out of it. Great pictures man. #thealliance approves :)

That would be an awesome place for a photoshoot

It sure would. I wish I was better at taking photographs.

This is pretty cool! I've always had a weakness for planes and flying - it always has interested me.

It reminds me of that time I went over to check out a plane crash not to far from my house. My friend told me about it and wanted to go and check it out - he invited me. And on the back of his motor we went. By the time, thankfully, all the passengers had left the scene and only a couple of investigators were there.

It was impressive.

I used to want to be a pilot when I grew old. But later on, it seemed too technical. I shifted to stewardess, but then you have to deal with the cranky people in the plane who never cease to complain, haha.

Thanks for sharing. It reminded me of a lot of things!
