Took home a large chunk of obsidian that was loose and on the side of the road. Not in a preservation or national park and I am pretty sure it’s allowed.

If the rockhounding book pointed out this spot it must be allowed, right?

Yeah, it should be fine to collect from the side of the road while not in a National Park. When I was a kid we actually found a road leading to an opal mine that had obsidian chunks scattered all over it- the quarry apparently was just filled with obsidian. And thanks for using the geology tag!
