Yesterday I penned a poem titled Serenity, and attached a picture of Isla Holbox. Since then, I’ve been wanting to share more about the incredible island, which perfectly represents theme that I sought to bring to life with my words.
A shot of the sun rays breaking through the clouds right before sunset on Isla Holbox. I was stoked to capture the bird with its wings spread emerging from above the cloud.
Nowhere I've ever visited is as serene as Isla Holbox, a quiet, laid-back island off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. There are no cars on the entire island, except for one police truck, because everyone else just drives golf carts, ATVs, or dirtbikes.
You will often see golf carts lining the streets of the island.
There are local taco shops with some of the best food you'll taste in all of Mexico, and a large variety of very homely accommodations available to visitors in affordable tropical bungalows. Around town things are very mellow as well. Children stay out till late at night playing with their friends in the town square, often without even their parents around. It is extremely peaceful, friendly, and community-oriented.
The golden sunrise through the palms.
And the coast truly is a slice of heaven on Earth. This below shot, from my post yesterday, is from the beach on the side of the island facing out towards the rest of the Gulf of Mexico. The water is so shallow that you can go out 25 meters from the coast into the sea and the water will still only be knee-high. Also, the entire beach can be your own for hours at a time, as visitors and locals will leisurely arrive and find their own spots far down along the coast, since it stretches so wide.
We rented a kayak and spent hours paddling along the entire coast, trying to spot the flamingos (even though it wasn't the right time of year for these incredible visitors), which come to Isla Holbox every year in large numbers. The island is famous for this among Mexican locals, and is garnering a lot more attention from tour agencies as well, which are bringing tourists to Isla Holbox at a quickly rising rate. So come visit before all the tourists start arriving!
And finally, I can't forget mentioning that the ocean water is turquoise and extremely clear, and even the waves are calm, as if they are taking a page out of the island's vibe.
These hammocks with H-O-L-B-O-X spelled out atop their wooden frame were awesome.
Truth be told, there's no place quite like Isla Holbox! De verdad es un sueño!
Makes me want to vacation. I'm stuck under 2 feet of snow in NY!!!

You should head somewhere tropical, get out to the ocean! There's nothing like it, especially when we're trying to get past the last bit of winter. Thanks for the kind words and support!

Really need to make plans to get out of town during a couple weeks of winter next year. Seems like older I get the harder they are on me.

Yes, the winter is the best time to escape, and we’re lucky to have the Caribbean so close, so I definitely recommend it for next winter!

Will have to try for sure. It would make my Wife and kids really happy to get to a beach during the winter. They actually love the beach way more then I do. Personally I just want a warm location to have a few cocktails and relax.
