SPOTTED #13: Flaschenpfand or how to deal with empty bottles in Germany

in travel •  8 years ago

Did you know Germany has a Bottle Deposit System..

I am always amazed when visiting Germany about their structure and organization. Germans are inventors, they have the best cars in the world, the best beer the best machines and well the best organized Bottle Deposit System in the World...

If you buy a beer in form of a Can or a Bottle you can return the bottle or can to any supermarket and you will receive an amount of 10 Cents to 25 Cents back...

I totally hate this system.. If you have a party in Germany you have return all these empty bottles and cans to a supermarket.. Well you could just put everything on the street and there will always be people collecting the bottles to get some cash...

Here is some bottles after a little party at my friends place

You take the bottles to the supermarket and there will be automated machines for the return of Cans and Bottles

After feeding the machine all Bottles you will receive a receipt which can be exchanges for cash at the supermarket...

I have been to many countries in the world and I don't think this system is really needed. Yeah sure Germany is leading in terms of Recycling but do you really need to bother the whole industry with such a system? I mean in the US or Asia you can just through your stuff away and it still works... I don't believe that the German system leads to less garbage.

Do you have system like the German Bottle System in your Country???

Don't you think its excessively wasteful to throw all these products away? Canada has this system and in fact if you don't care to go through the hassle to get your few cents back, we all have recycling bins like garbage bins that we can just throw it all in. They get emptied once every couple of weeks.

ah didnt now that canada did this non-sense too. well I am n ot against recycling. I am just saying that the manpower spent on these systems are propably non-sense.

we could just put it in the normal garbage normal recylcing system are able to pick out the bottles without a problem .

Agree, definitely better ways of doing it.

I was amazed to see that when I was in Germany. I thought it was much smarter than the way we do it in the states. We create much more waste here

I am not sure if you create more waste in the us. maybe but even if you did a proper recylcing channel does not need a bottle deposit..

Do you realise the stuff only gets recycled if someone buys it? The rest goes into landfill. Glass has to be reformulated after being melted down, or it doesn't make good glass. The sodium is partially lost in the process. The plastic has to be mixed with at least 30% new polyethylene also. And they keep makung them thinner.

The netherlands has a much smaller but similar one. They call it "statiegeld". It annoys me because even when the bottle has this magic word half the time the machines won't accept them.

I hate this idiotic enviro-religion they promote. But then, just another waste of stolen money for the promise of unscientific and fetishistic impossible outcomes. Anything but personal responsibility. A world full of overgrown, pampered babies...

well I think most of the people hate the system. sometimes I ask myself what went wrong in democracy

Can you help me to resteem one of my post please?! Only if you can. Thanks

In the place I live, we have a special bin for glass at home (together with the normal bin and the recycling bin), and the garbage men are emptying it once a month. It is so far the best system i have been in touch with.

yes. that's ok! but this non-sense with the deposit is just stupid
